Rob, it really is difficult to teach phrasing, but there are definitely exercises one can do (besides listening to all the greats). I wrote a bunch of articles about improvisation with some ideas for phrasing here: http://www.mikeneer.com/lapsteelin/category/improvising/

Very, very nice Mike. Great tone and I love the way you don't over use vibrato. That is definitely concert material.

Mike - Great touch and feel. Excellent vibrato. I need to find the time for a few lessons. I am going to try using the high D tuning. Are you using an F for the bottom string?
