Thanx, Andy via Jeff, for the great int., I hadn't read that before. Lot's of mention of steel guitar and pedal steel, with not a non in sight. How refreshing.
JB on steel guitar, "One of my pet peeves, is that the public still doesn’t know what the instrument is." In an odd way that hasn't changed. |

I met Jerry at SGC about 15 years ago. I could not believe I was walking around the convention with the MASTER. We talked about a lot of things as we walked around. I mentioned the old Red Foley show and Jerry made it known in a polite way the Red Foley was at the bottom of his friendship list. Yes... He was a human being and had his likes and dislikes... like we all do. Sure wish I could have got to know him better... Lee Gillespie |

i always liked this one "the three most important skills in playing the steel guitar are..#1 melody, #2 melody, and #3 melody." _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

Quote: |
It's sort of a cliche, but many "geniuses" (and I think Jerry Byrd qualifies in the arena of steel guitar playing) can have difficult or prickly personalities |
He was rough on the exterior and very sensitive on the interior. |

I never spoke with Jerry Byrd, or saw him play live. However, I did communicate by letter on at least two occasions. He was very gracious and sent a handwritten reply to each letter.
He closed a letter written 9/16/04 with the following:
"I wish you much success-and 'Keep your thumb pick hot'." _________________ My Vintage Steel Guitars

Jerry used to say, "It is not important what happens on the frets but what happens between the frets." |

Got that one on my Mag 8 (my autograph steel) headstock, which he taught me on. His pudgy fingers hated the tuners and he often mentioned my need to grind them down. Solved that issue with a Ric 8 Bakelite, made him happy. |

I came across a good quote from Jerry the other day while reading some old stuff about him.
He was asked: Do you read notes, Jerry? Yes, but not enough to interfere with my playing!! |
