| I've just become the proud owner of a new (used) Zum S-12 Universal. When I plug into my Nash. 400, I get a TOTALLY different sound than on my Carter,and can not seem to find a good setting. Can someone give me their settings. The Zum has a stock Zum pick-up. |

Hi Sonny...I've been playing a U-12 Zum since 1983. I play through two session 400's. Both models from the 1970s. You can try these settings, but the older 400s aren't parametric:
presence: 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock
treble: 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock
mid: around 8 or 9 oclock
shift: 11 to 1 o'clock
bass: 3 o'clock to full on
I had a stock pickup until 2 yrs ago. I installed a GeorgeL 12-1

Sonny,
Here's the procedure I follow whenever I am searching for tone with a new guitar combination. First set everything to zero (straight up) then dial in the shift to about 10 O clock and cycle through the paramid frequencies untill you get something that sounds reasonable to you, yoy may have to use more or less cut(shift) but I would be real surprised if you had to have that on the plus side. Once you get that where you are happywith it then you can season to taste with the bass, treble and presence. Good Luck |

Hi Sonny,
I've played a Zumsteel S-10 for two years now, and my only criticism of the guitar is that the pickup is a little strong in the mids for my taste; through some Fenders it sounds great, but in some rooms, it sounds kinda lousy through the Evans SE 200. Other rooms it sounds really great, punchy and present. Sometimes I use a Lil'Izzy which boosts the highs and brings the mids under control. This is truly nuts, but I swear it sounds better with a 1" bar than a 7/8". Compared to a Zum a Franklin sounds "scooped" to my ears. Does any of this sound familiar?

Sonny, Jay has a good approach. I start with all the knobs set at zero. I start with the mids. The pyramid I set at 750 to 800 then the mids to -12 -15 the lows +3 highs 0 - +3 and presence +2 - +6 depending on the size of the room. Sound is a funny thing. Try this, set your amp up behind you and get a setting your happy with and then move the amp out in front of you about 6-8 feet. See what you get. Like I said sound is funny stuff
