I've heard this term since I got back into steel, and must admit, I don't understand it. A good explanation would be helpful to me and others getting started. _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)

A split is the raising and the lowering of a single string at the same time to achieve an in-between pitch.
Example: on E9 neck, raising the 6th string 1/2 step, G#>A while lowering it a whole step.
Result: G.
Mechanically, the raising by 1/2 plus the lowering by 1 does not necessarily result in a perfect arithmetic -1/2 for various physical reasons. Hence the design of mechanical means to tune the 'split tuning'. |

If you can find the British Steelies website, I have had a great explanation from a couple of very knowledgeable sources - if you can find the website, look under the section headed Steel Guitar technical. _________________ Ben-Rom #017 'Lorelei', Guild D25, Epiphone 'Joe Pass', Roland 40XL, Hilton VP

Quite a few brands of guitars include a row (or just several) allen screws under the changer for the fine tuning of these split notes, there's a diagram near the bottom of this page on my site showing how to accomplish it with an extra rod. It's a great trick as those splits can yield some cool snaky sounds!

OK, I was just curious, as well as probably many other new folks, that explains it. _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)
