Wally, that Valley of the Roses is just incredible. Here's another receent thread about Kayton on the Marty Stuart Show you might enjoy:

We had a thread going on the Jerry Douglas Forum about this, here is what Jerry had to say about Kayton:

Quote:
Kayton Roberts is a one of a kind sweetheart of a fellow and steel playing fool! Yes he played with Hank Snow for years. When all the big-time steel players with 20 pedals and 64 knee levers would be amassed at the Opry back stage right, Kayton would come out with his milking stool and single-neck Fender and slay them all. They would just stand and watch. Amazing though, he would start the song and then just play all the way through without ever coming up for air until the last beat of the song. He has forgotten more steel than most of them can play.

Danny Gatton was a single neck-man too. One of the best conversations I ever had with him was about the pickups on the old Fenders and his favorite old time steel heroes.

Great song, great picking by Kayton. Brings back memories of Jerry Byrd's recording of Valley of the Roses in 1961, at a slightly faster tempo.

Rather than start a new thread, I'm gonna bump this up and tell you that Kayton has a new CD entitled "Valley of the Roses" that was released last year I believe. I picked it up on Itunes today...it is flat out incredible what he does on the console steel.

Includes Marty and Kenny and Chris and Ranger Doug.

Check it out!

A Fender guitar into a Fender tube amp. Tone doesn't get any better than that.
