Bought this old Sho Bud on the forum last month for $900.00 needing work.
2 wrong knee levers, 1 right one in bad shape.
General rough condition but workable.

See the before pictures and in progress pictures attached below;

Stripped it down.
Replaced the badly damaged front apron down to 1/8" deep with a quilted maple veneer.
Replaced the wood marquetry decorative strips that were too thin to fix with 1/8th inch White Mother Of Pearl and Red Abalone shell inlay strips for total width of 3/8 width.
Cut away 1/8th inch from the front apron bottom and created an 1/8" protective strip on the bottom to protect the shell inlay.

The guitar was Clear Red & Aged Amber* but we are going to do it in Amber and Clear Blue like that attached picture of another one someone did here on the forum.
*Plus 40 years worth of bar dings and dents.... The usual.
The Front & Back Apron as well as the neck will be Blue.
I have some of those white fretboards already which I like.

We are going to do the same to my old Sho Bud that is still in Saigon.
We will turn these two Pro D-10s into 2 SD-10s with 3&4 to sell.

Will use the remaining parts to make 2 more DS-10's with 5&5 for myself and my woodworking buddy Denny, who's workshop we are using for this project.

While in Saigon this summer I am going to try to find a machine shop to machine out of 6061 billets new Peg Heads, End Plates for SD-10 and the Changer Blocks if they can do it. The old ones just will not buff out as well as I'd like.

I also hate the idea of having those gapping holes where the C6th changer, etc were at...

I will be flying there 48 hours from now so Denny is going to do the finish while I am away.
Denny was in a guitar making class I taught years ago and became a guitar builder in his spare time.

First Pictures are of the guitar as I got it;

Next 4 pictures are as we ended the day today;

Last is of a guitar I saw on the forum and will do the same colors as well as the wood necks in Blue too;

This is going to be a fine looking guitar - dynamite wood grain on the body . . .
It's all ways cool when these old Buds get restored - lots of work , but worth it in the end . . Good luck on your project . . .

By the way...
Michael Yahl advised me that the Blue & Blond Sho Bud that I liked so much was done by Bob Mullers.
Great work on that one, a real inspiration to me.

Hi Andy, I remember speaking to you about your Sho-Bud project. I recently purchased the guitar that could be a twin to yours at the Dallas show also. I like what you're doing with the restoration, especially the inlay, it should be a real eye catcher when it's finished.

This is a photo of my guitar:

These are a couple shots of the Pro III

I think yours will look great with the blue and Maple finish, can't wait to see the finished product.

Hi Bob,
Yes that does look like the twin that was adopted by a better home.
If the one I got was in that condition I'd never touch it.
I was tempted to leave it Red & Blond, but that Blue & Blond one you did is just so stunning I can not resist doing it like that.

You may not have seen in the pictures it is sitting on two Quilted Maple planks. Enough to make three more Sho Bud bodies.
We intend to use that and these two D-10's to create 4 SD-10's.
I will sell the two re-built ones with 3 & 4 to help off set the costs.
My friend Denny and I will end up with two SD-10's with 5 & 4 that will use the parts left over. There is another pearl design I may use on one of these and I will attache a scan of that here to see.
The one on the top is the version going onto this guitar we are doing now.
Best wishes,
Andy

Reply with quote

Well for those who may be interested;
Onward to get this project finished I had 8 new end plates cast and machined for the legs.
I did not want to use the old ones that had the large holes for the C6th changer and the extra holes for pick up switch and one extra coil tap switch. I hate to see these converted guitars when they are left with gaping un-needed holes.
Did this while in Saigon where that kind of work is less expensive than here in the USA.
I will post the pictures here of one set here after it was buffed out.
I am playing with the idea of doing a couple of the guitars by sandblasting the end plates and anodizing them black like the older crossover Sho Buds.
I always liked that look.
Later I will also put up some pictures of the new key heads that we cast.
That was because the old ones were not buffing out well and I really want this job to look great in the end.
Sorry but the pictures were taken with an iPhone so not as clear as I'd like....

Here are the New and Old Key Heads.
Cast and machined for the roller nuts and Grover tuning machines.
I think these are nicer than the old ones and well worth the extra cost.
If we are going to do this we may as well do the best we can.
All the pictures were taken with an iPhone so not the best photography possible.....

Andy, that is some amazing work! They are restored to better than new condition. You are lucky that you have access to reasonable casting. Is it sand casting?
The finish on your cabinets is to die for.

Reply with quote

Thanks Bent,
Yes they were sand cast.
That caused a tiny amount of shrinkage in the end plates from back to front of guitar of 1/16" so the bodies will be made 1/16" shorter from back to front. I was warned about that from the guy who did the casting.

I was told that if we make two part dies to cast the parts in we can get much better quality, but that is quite expensive for just four guitars.
However if later there becomes a market for these I may consider doing that. Once dies are made they can be used many times over years and the casting are better and cost less too.

A couple of the castings have a little pitting so I may sand blast them and do a black anodized finish to have them look like the older Sho Bud Crossovers and Fender Steels that were done that way and looked cool.

The bodies are not yet finished but soon will be.
One will be Clear Blue & Amber like the one Bob did that I liked so much. The others we still need to decide about. Each will be different. I'd like to do at least one as a Black, Red and amber sunburst...

Thanks for the nice comments.
Andy

Reply with quote

Well for anybody interested we are progressing along slowly.
Both Denny and I did not like the idea of covering up the beautiful wood in the neck (Quilted Maple) with a screened fret board.
For the two guitars that we will keep we liked the idea of inlaid fret boards showing the nice wood. Not so easy, but cool....

For mine shown below we routed out the outline of the fret board and fret positions with a 1/16" router bit and then inlaid 1/16th inch strips of Paua Abalone shell.

I will route for the position marker inlays next weekend.
For those, also in the pictures, these are copies of a style used by National some years ago.
Ours I made using Paua Abalone with White Mother of Pearl shell roman numerals.

If we don't screw up, this should look great.
Andy

Got our logos made too now.
These will be inlaid into the front apron of the guitars that Denny and I are making for our own.
They are White Mother of Pearl and Paua Abalone Shells from New Zealand.
The guitars we will sell will have the Sho Bud decals.

Thanks Bob,
These were quite a bit of work.
In fact the first one I made got ruined in a workshop accident.
I'd just inlaid all the frets with pearl and we were about to run it through the sander.
Denny by accident turned the depth handle on the sander the wrong way and ate up the first two frets before we could stop the machine.
Oops, well S*** happens and thats all part of the fun.

Good looking logo's Andy. I have my single neck Fingertip out to be refinished now, and we're going to try and inlay your Sho-Bud logo on this one. I'll let you know how it turns out. Be sure and post photos of the finished fretboard when you're done.

Neck & Fret Board Almost Done

Got the fret board inlays done over the weekend by installing the position markers.
I think it came out Ok;

I do plan to put in strips of Mother of Pearl and Abalone along the sides of the neck too and hope to get it done next weekend.

Here is a picture of my partner in this project Denny with his brand new saxophone that arrived today.... Some of you may know what this really is???

Can you say "White Lightnin"?

Well after a little Hibernation this winter we have got back to work on this project again.
Today I completed the inlay work on the front apron.

Decided against my name on the front and did this American eagle with flag and my initials in a circle.

Put the inlay with my name so it will show on the inside near the changer when turned upside down.

After that we started the final stage of glueing up the decks.

Next week we plan to inlay the pearl and abalone strips on the sides of the necks.
