I got a text from a friend that said Rusty had been in touch with member of her family this morning. That's all I know. It's very easy for us to sit at our computers and judge people, talk about them as though we were all gather in a big room. We are not and if we can't say something good we should keep our keyboards put away. _________________ Johnny "Dumplin" Cox

Kevin Hatton, thank you so very much for the compliment.
And Bob, could you please direct me to the rules of the SGF so that I can behave myself as well? Also, Rusty's name is spelled, "Rhoads".
That, to me, is akin to misspelling the name of Mark O'Connor... or Herby Wallace, for example. Herby was a dear friend of mine. I recorded with him for one of his CDs!
Thanx,

Well I would like to ask Rusty the 3 most important questions..
Whats the best brand of strings ?
How often do you change them ?
How many watts is your amp ?

I hope Rusty's OK. He's clearly a fine player. Life as a full-time professional musician is tough - more than I could tolerate, and I did it for long enough to tell. I hope he somehow finds a way to happiness with his life. For me, it was easier and better to just do something else for my primary income, and the result was that I had more, not less, time to play the music I wanted to play.

Yeah, things are moving that way in a lot of places. Even tenured college professors have to watch what they say - it is very easy to go right over a cliff. Extreme rapid communications has turned the world into a fishbowl - everything you say has the potential to be examined under a hostile microscope.

With due respect, I don't think we should be trying to chase away women and children from this forum. This is not a purely 'crusty old boy's club', even though it may sometimes seem that way. But to answer your question, there are quite a few women on the SGF, and some younger players also, and we could use plenty more.
The forum rules are actually pretty simple and reasonable, IMHO - http://steelguitarforum.com/agree.html. I think it's possible to discuss anything worthwhile about steel guitar within their confines, with a little thought and restraint. I think we can even get a bit 'crusty' sometimes. But there are limits to what is reasonable for b0b to tolerate. I don't think he can accept defamatory, threatening, and other outrageous speech without a reasonable expectation of personal liability himself for letting people do that on his playground.

Yeah, Tony - and there's more 'burning questions' like that we could beat to death again and again. |

With all due respect - there are a helluvalotta great players out there - any instrument - who aren't featured on big hits by big names. Name me the big hits that Roy Buchanan or Danny Gatton played guitar on. There are great guitarists galore in this category, and I can think of some examples for steel also, but I don't wanna drag them into this. This is not how I think about playing talent. YMMV.

Woops, Sorry I got the name wrong.
Obviously I meant Rusty Rhoads.
I just wanted to know what his claim to fame was. The other guys you mentioned Dave have famous albums and/or YouTubes. Red Neck Jazz Explosion, etc...
'Just curious because I've never heard him play.
Again, sorry 'bout that. I did a discogrophy search and the other guys name came up... I didn't think He played with Ozzie Osborn.
When I do a search for Sneaky Pete for example... I was hoping for something like that to come up.
I went back and fixed the other post.
At least I have Alex's fiddle CD I bought that year he played at the convention!

Yeah, I know you meant Rusty, not Randy. But I don't think that anything Roy or Danny played on was a big Top-40 type hit. For example, Redneck Jazz Explosion was fantastic, but largely a cognoscenti phenomenon. Roy played with all kinds of great people, but basically flew under-the-radar of the general public for his entire career, and he typically bailed out whenever the stakes got large.
So I agree this far - players like Roy and Danny, and plenty of other great players, have or have had a serious public profile in some corners. But I can name plenty of players I know who play at that level, but there's no point in me naming them because nobody will know who they are. But don't assume that lack of public profile implies any lack of playing talent. IMHO. |

Rusty appeared on the larger steel world radar when David Jackson started using him to demo Jackson guitars in Dallas and St. Louis around 2007/8. His playing impressed many visitors to the Jackson room at these shows, and thus word of his talent spread among the steel community here on the forum. Many I believe knew of his playing in Nashville prior to him demoing for Jackson.
Here's a clip of him in 2008:

Jamie, I really like the video. And it looks like Rusty just got off a jobsite somewhere with the big steel-toed boots. The boots don't look easy to do that fancy footwork. |

I seem to recall Rusty playing on the early James Taylor records. The steel break in "Anywhere Like Heaven" comes to mind. That one is worth dissecting and goes down as a good example of PSG in a pop classic. |
