Here is the list I am working on....

Julian Tharpe
Lloyd Green
Maurice Anderson
Zane Beck
Robert Randolph
Jeff Newman

I know there are many others but I want to give everyone a chance to throw some good ones out there.

Russ Hicks. Primarily, at least up until he started playing G2s...don't know about the Russler.

The late Dale Wagner is another one.

Thanks Stormy! I appreciate you saying all that!

Junior, is that the tuning that Doug Jernigan uses? I know he developed something like that. I have heard of it but candidly not that familiar with it. Love to hear you on it. I tried to find something on You Tube and I saw a bunch of you and Gary Hogue playing!!!! Wow!!!! I am so glad to say I saw you guys play in person many times! I sure miss him and his playing was just out of sight!!!!!

Donny H. - I certainly agree with that in principle. It is the musician not the instrument that makes music come alive. That said, with the steel guitar especially the pedal steel being such a young instrument and it is still in a development phase I do think dialogue about everything from tunings, pedal setup, mechanics, design, amplification, etc are all relevant to what our instrument can become.

I have a good friend that bought his 7 year old son an electric guitar for Christmas. Well his son told me that Santa brought it to him this morning. Nice! I think I will talk to Santa about delivering some pedal steels next year to young kids around the world! Of course, we have some decisions to make on how many strings, pedals, setup, etc. to make before loading them aboard his sleigh.
Whoa! Very Happy

Zane check out Tony Arrowood on youtube. Hes one of the best single neck players that flies under the radar. Great tone. He has something in common with you. He has a wrist lever on his marlen.

What about Sarah Jory?

By the way, I want to go back to my 12 string Universal (Newman setup) but I am really missing the D string in the E9 mode.
What copedent do you suggest to include it?

Zane,

With the exception of Zane Beck (maybe) and Robert all of your listed players would also make a list of guys who played E9th and C6th.

I agree with DH. It's the player. Lloyd Green with 3&4 is my main listen to guy since we lost John Hughey. I listened to the sound bites Lloyd plays on Amber Digsby' new CD last night and he's all E9th. Lloyd recorded some nice C6th things years ago prior to the LDG thing. Julian Tharpe's recordings are the ones that blow me away. But once Bill Stafford explained to me how JT's guitars were set up it made sense. Strings 1 - 7 are E9th and 8 - 14 are C6th. Combined for a E9-6th tuning I think. Zane Beck is another player I listen to his recordings he made before his passing. Personally, I think Julian & Zane were years ahead of there time.

Zane I feel your pain. I've always felt a little snubbed by the double neckers (perhaps not warranted but nonetheless). I've played E9/B6 U12 since 1982. Bought an MSA "Universal" then. Had a push pull Emmons U12 even, and I know own/play a Fessenden.
It took me a while to find a well toned U12.
I'm secure with my choice. I've contemplated buying a double 10 but come to my senses when I conclude there would be changes/strings I'd miss not to mention the handicap of shouldering the extra lbs.
BTW - I think I could sit down at a double ten and play more C6 then most double neckers. (hope those aren't fittin' words.

Do I hear an Amen for Red Rhodes. A complete original. If you don't know his playing, get hold of a copy of 'And the Hits Just Keep on Coming' by Mike Nesmith. Just Nesmith on acoustic guitar and Red Rhodes on his steel. Utterly amazing!
(All the other names get my vote too - this is not an either/or - but Red's playing is unique.

This thread is getting better. It had me worried a bit because I just have to believe there are more single neck players who belong in the greatness category! I think we are seeing that develop here as the discussion continues. That is encouraging.

Paul - I likely made a mistake when I mentioned E9/C6 in this article. I should have kept my initial comments more about single neck vs. double neck pedal steel guitars. I was clear to keep it from including non-pedal in the discussion. That would be a whole different comparison of which I doubt is too relevant for what I hoped to accomplish here. I do think Zane Beck like many others of his day spent a good bit of time playing E9/C6th tunings as they were. Clearly, he was a developer of innovative tunings and a proponent of the single neck guitars being all that a steel player needed. I think it is fair to say that the S12 Uni players essentially play E9/B6 Tunings. My tuning is also closer to that world than Robert's is. Again, I'm not ready to make this thread about tuning discussions.

To all - I hope we are establishing that single neck players are not only out there in abundance but they are highly respected. There is no question that to some degree or another there is at least a misunderstanding about pedal steels with regard to multiple necks versus single. There might even be a bias toward them but I think that is improving for sure.

I love all the names that have been thrown out there. I think I will start another thread at some point (or someone else can if you like) to list players who are masters of 2 tunings...the obvious E9/C6 combo but I think there are more out there than that.

Stay tuned,

Zane

You've forgotten Basil Henriques, who does have his own favorite tuning, but can play better than most with any copedant. Cool

I play a U-12, but 99.9% of what I do is on the E9 side. I use the E9/B tuning instead of an extended E9 because I like the low B string, which I drop down to A on the A pedal. I never had the missing D string, so I'm unaware of what I may be missing. But I have the note is on a knee lever, and I use it all the time.

I would like a 13 string, with a 3rd chromatic string tuned to B that would lower to Bb on the E-F raise. I don't think there's a string thin enough to be tuned that high without breaking.
