I have this unique instrument for sale.

It is a Renaissance 4 string acoustic bass lute-guitar in absolute mint condition. No scratch, cracks, dents or scuff marks. 10/10.
And it roars with a sonic boom.

It is modelled after a Renaissance lute of the Middle ages of the 1700’s and the only one of its kind in the world. That’s where the word luthier originated.

I am the first owner.

The specifications are as follows:

Serial Number: 35-14 (1990)

The guitar was built by Master luthier Mervyn Davis here in South Africa with reference at his websites:

The guitar can be played in three positions, ordinary position, as a cello between the legs or standing as an upright bass.

The guitar is shown on the first web under the heading, Bass Instruments. Feel free to contact him independantly.

Materials used
All South African wood

10 Back ribs with 2 side panels, neck and neck- panels (bookmatched): Cape Beechwood-Rapanea melanophloeos

Top: Quarter sawn Pinaceae family- Pinus radiata, 5 sections.

Fretboard: Leadwood-Combretum imberbe.

Bridge, tailpiece, neck strengthener, truss rod cover, binding and spike: Camelthorn- Acacia erioloba.

Nut: Warthog tusk- Phacocoerus africanus.

Mother of Pearl inlay around the sound hole from Jefferies Bay, South Africa.
Weight: 2,5 kg.
It comes with an acoustic double bass pickup.

Because of the uniqueness and value of this piece of musical art, it does not come to its right in my specific music genre and musical taste.
My attention is more pedal steel orientated.

It was never played outside my smokefree home, only inside, jamming with friends.

The guitar is available for inspection by any representative of the US Embassy here in Pretoria, Christie’s International in Johannesburg 50 miles away, or anybody else by appointment only.

I can also ask Mervyn if he is prepared to extend the warranty to the new owner.
Note the labour that went into the construction and inlays.

My price $9 000 plus postage. (New one will cost $10 000)

No case due to the peculiar morphology, but will be packed to international standards.
Interested parties will be handled on a FCFS basis.

Sincerely,

Jan Viljoen

After some thought, I am prepared to accept a pedal steel as partial payment for my Lute Bass, which is still in prime condition. Not yet played again.

I would like a red single 10 in good condition, Emmons copedent, mica or lacquer. White also acceptable.

As stated above the Lute is available for inspection by the US Embassy, Sotheby's, Christie's International or anybody else.
I can also take it to Sez Adamson in Johannesburg, who has good credentials in the psg world.

I know this transaction will take some time, but I am prepared to go all the way.
I propose that each party pays his side of the postage to smooth matters.
I will accept a money order for the balance.

I reserve the right not to accept any offer that does not sound right.

What have you got?

Sincerely,

Jan
