Topic: Rickenbacker DC-16 recordings? |

Hey all, I found these two great pics at a French steel site; they're both originally from here I believe. I am fascinated by the "old ugly" steel and am wondering if there are any recordings out there of this instrument, particularly of Mr. Mooney and Mr. McAuliffe? Any help in this greatly appreciated!

As far as I know, and from what Ralph told me, his earliest recordings were on his Magnatone that he rigged with pedals, but I could very well be wrong. He said he had the homemade pedal rack tied on the legs with chicken wire.

Mike, I've tried my darnedest to find Lucky Pslegler recording references and they seem to be nonexistent. Very cool that you knew the man.

If you read the chapter on Herb Remington in Volk's Lap Steel book, he mentions playing this model Ric during his Wills tenure - said he fought the tuning constantly. They appear to have been popular with many post war steelers til Fender came out with the Dual Pro.
Look up fellow forumite Vernon Hester (VGHester) on YouTube - he has some great cuts on his DC-16.

Thanks a million for the info Jerome! I am checking out the Vernon Hester videos - wonderful stuff, what a great player, so much feeling. And the "old ugly" sounds terrific. This is just what I needed. Great to see the Herb Remington anecdote too. |

Wow - I didn't know Vern just passed - ( seems like he just posted that Blue Hawaii clip last month!) I need to check that section more often. We are sadly seeing too many of our great fellow steelers going home. That is what is priceless about the forum and YouTube, that these players' knowledge will live on - I loved watching Vernons clips - they are a LESSON in tone, classic technique and taste. I was hoping to make a trip to SC & meet him...this is like the 3rd great steeler around here that's passed in the last 6 months.

Actually, Vern passed in Nov. '10. Yes, appreciate our elder statesmen--that is the one thing that makes steel guitar so great: the way we look up to them for wisdom.
