I went to a birthday party/jam session this past Sun. and the bass player brought along a guitar player who splits his time between Seattle and Anchorage his name is Doug Hastings,His friend told me that he was the guitarist in the band Rhinoceros,I asked him to play part of that song that was there hit,I had forgotten the name of it but they used to play it on the radio all of the time in about 1967,And he said Oh! you mean "apricot brandy' and proceeded to play it note for note,My jaw dropped,Then he played and sang a great version of Cream's "Strange Brew",He said that he's just getting back into it,If you live near Seattle keep an eye out,he's a great guy also,he was also in the Buffalo Springfield for a short while.

I always liked Rhinoceros. The other guitar player in that band besides Doug was Danny Weiss. He was the replacement for Neil Young in the Buffalos and he played on a record by Danny O'Keefe.
Good to hear he is still making music.

Here's another Rhino alumnus and one of my bestest friends in the whole round world.
http://johnfinleymusic.com/
Go the the "Music" page and check out his take on "You Can't Take That Away From Me". It's off a CD I engineered and co-produced with John at my studio.
Phil Upchurch is on guitar.
BTW,It's the same studio where Joaquin's last recordings were cut and later released as the CD "Murph".

Oh yeah...Rhinoceros. Cool band. Michael Fonfara on organ & Billy Mundi on drums. Saw them at the Fillmore East in '68...on the bill with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and the Moody Blues.
I believe Danny Weiss was also the guitarist in the movie "The Rose".
"Apricot Brandy", "When You Say You're Sorry", "You're My Girl", and "I Will Serenade You" were some of their better tunes.

Mike, that was your old home studio, right?

Danny Weiss wrote " Apricot Brandy "
yes, he's in Bette's movie " the rose "
his dad, Johnny Weiss was a known guitar player in Calif back in the 50s & probably before
Tex Williams & the Western Caravan among others
i remember asking here if anyone had any pics or info on Danny's dad :
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=137004
i caught Rhino's debut in LA back in 68 at the old hullabaloo tv studio that was converted
John Finley, Michael Fonfara were already known from Toronto's John Lee & the Checkmates back in the 60s
Peter Hodges on bass (the original atomic rooster), Larry Leishman on guitbox from John & Lee & Duke Edwards on drums, ended up joining Rhino when they were out of new york (on the shores of lake Mahopac)
Jeff Cutler who was a close friend at the time had been the drummer for John & Lee - Thanx to him i got to know Rhino & roadied a bit for them
i learned how to play & pick thanx to those guys
i always dug John Finley as a singer & was tickled pink to catch some of his recent stuff in Calif & in Toronto

We started it at the old North Hollywood studio and did the 2nd half and the mixing at my new digs here in Sylmar. Apart from how great it is musically,it may also be the best sounding record I've ever recorded. Too bad no one cared.I did get to play guitar on a few gigs with that band at the Baked Potato.Playing with John Finley onstage is always a treat.

BTW I've had long conversations with Danny Weiss about how he remembers standing at the foot of the stage watching his dad and Murph play with Spade down at the Riverside Rancho in the 50s.

kool thread !

I was able to see "R" a few times way back then with Doug and Danny. Both kick butt players but Doug had that extra special Telecaster thing going on. Kinda like an R+B, rock and roll chicken picker !

and yeh, B Mundi did the Zappa thing...that was another another show we used to go to in the Village now and then at the Garrick Theater...
