I was having trouble with the signal from the pickup on my cat can lap steel. The volume would jump radically up and down at times while playing it. I thought it was a faulty pickup, but it appears to be something at the input jack. It appears that the 1/4" female input jack can rotate to the point where the hot clip (that grabs the tip of the male jack) can bump into the side of the metal can, which is a direct electrical path to the strings (and ground if I am touching the strings). I'm guessing this is what was degrading the pickup's signal.
