Ok guy's i've put 2 new pull on my steel today for a try out 1st and 7th strings 1/2 tone pull to G and looking for ways to mix those pulls in my playing to see if they fit my style of playing, i know how to make a 7th chord with 5 6 7 strings and A&B pedals and raising 7th string lever...but i can get that same 7th chord 2 frets lower with my B pedal and lowering my E's lever with 4 5 6 strings, so my question is...what would be the most usefull use for that 1st and 7th string 1/2 tone raise other than a 7th chord?.

thanks. Smile

See a Post called "1st and 7th String Raise" first posted 9/27/09. Lots of answers for you...

Thanks Barry... Smile i've already read that post and it does'nt tell or show much for those pulls... they talk more about 1st and 7th string whole tone pull. Oh Well

I assume you mean raise lever?

I have the 7th string only raising to G. That way I have the pedals-down 13th chord with the 1st string.

The G raise gives you a #5 at the B pedal+E lowers position.

Another use for the 7 & 1 G raise would be for the minor chord at the no-pedals fret. Just substitute string 7 and/or 1, with the G raise, for 6 and/or 3. Then you can add the sixth or seventh (or major seventh) of the chord with the 2nd string (and low 7th or 6th with the 9th string), and possibly lower the fifth with a Bb lower, if you have that. (I personally lower 3 & 6 for this minor position instead, on a different lever.)

I occasionally use the 7th string half strep raise as to get a passing tone or an augmented chord. Not often, but enough to justify having it.

Even if you can get the same chord 2 frets down w B pedal and E's to Eb you cant lower the E's further down a whole note in that position.

Things to use 7th F# - G
Play at 4th fret strings 7 5 4 with A pedal F# - G and E's lowered for a G7
Same position without E's lowered G7b9
Same position with E's raised G9
Same position w C pedal G7#9

F# - G also lets you play any 3 succesive notes from the pentatonic scale on strings 9 8 7

F#-G and B pedal gives a nice E minor pentatonic on the low strings

I like the G - G# sound when used in open position

Also combine F#-G with a slide like....
start at 8 string 3rd fret

play str 8, str 7, slide up 1 fret and raise F#-G, play str 5 A pedal, string 4(e's raised) and from there you can release and lower E's back to root note or slide wherever melody and inspiration takes you

there is a whole lot of fun to do with F#-G

more than just the minor in open position or the dom7 in A+B position

have fun exploring the F#-G possibilities

Pat,
I've touched on this several times in the "Beginners Notes". I like the change myself...
Try Beginners Notes #s 38 and 41. There are a couple others on the 1st string 1/2 tone raise, check them out also... Good luck with these new changes. Dick....

Pat,

Here are a couple of ideas –

Strings 10 9 7
Open no pedals – Bm (B D F#)
Engage the 7th string raise to get a “G” chord (B D G)
So you can go back and forth between the “1” & “3” chord of a scale.

Strings 9 7 6
Open with G# to A “B” foot pedal engaged – “D” chord (D F# A)
Engage the 7th string raise to get a “Dsus4” chord (D G A)
I thinking resolving from Dsus4 to D is a pretty sounding chord change.

This line of thinking may lead to you finding other possibilities as well.

Raising the F# 7th string is not useful enough for me to be one of my top 6 or 7 knee lever changes. But on an E9 neck with 8 or more knee levers I might try it.

I have it on the same lever as my 2nd string lower, so that I don't have to dedicate a precious lever to it. I think that Tommy White does this also.

I mostly use it for the 7th chord, but also with pedals down working off of the 9th string root it gives you a scale tone or a sus4.

Me too. I have them on LKV.
(Note: I tune my 2nd string to D, so the lower is just 1/2 step--D# raise is on RKR.)

Today i've moved the 7th string raise to G with my 2nd and 9th string lower lever Oh Well , the 7th string raise to G goes really nice with 9th string lower...it gives me a big full 7th chord with 10 9 8 7 6 with the A & B pedals down Smile , i also added the 2nd string raise to E with the 1st string raise to G# on another lever, i'm gonna play with it for a few days to see how it works out , right now i have all the same pulls as Tommy White except for the B's lower. Smile, not sure if i'm gonna leave it there but that's the fun of it trying new combinations. Razz

All chords and scales mentioned here are in open position, for simplicity (not that I ever play anything in open position)...

Besides adding the seventh to the A chord, you can get a G chord (that morphs into a Bm when you release the F# to G raise), a G7th chord (add the "F" lever), a B augmented chord, and you can get an E minor chord. It can also add a sus4 to a D chord.

I lower the second string to D, raise the G#s to A, raise the F#s to G, and I have a 12 string E minor pentatonic scale as well as the E minor chord.

And you can hit the G before the G# for E blues licks...
