Original, excellent condition, Rickenbacker Silver Hawaiian lap steel with no problems and original case. To be shipped from Moorhead, Minnesota. From Brad Bechtel: "According to Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars, the Silver Hawaiian (Pre-WWII model NS, Model No. 100) was manufactured between 1937 and 1943. The version with two knobs on the same side was introduced in 1939, so yours would have been between 1939 and 1943." I purchased this off Forum member Bill Willingham two years ago .

Most of those specs in the photos are dust. The chrome is not mint but it is in excellent condition. The dark area on the fretboard is the reflection of leaves from trees above.

$1180 plus shipping. There is one on EBAY now that's going for $1695 plus shipping :

The last four photos are from summer 2009. Thanks, steve t

Thanks for the nice comment, Keith. To anyone interested, I've revised my add to refect the fact I'm in no urgency to sell since the pedal steel I was going to buy is now gone. steve t

Steve, that sure is a nice looking guitar. I have one very similar, with the white and black knobs, which I believe indicates it is a 1939. Inside there are newspapers stuffed in during manufacturing. So far I've not opened mine up to check the date on the newspaper. I'm told that people would later remove the newspapers and replace it with cotton rags to give a slightly different sound. Unfortunatey I don't have a case with mine, that one looks to be in decent condition. Good luck with that!

That was true with mine, an 8-stringer. I did take out the newspaper stuffing, but it was shredded into 1/4" pieces, so it was hard to read very much. I didn't see any dates, but there were some grocery adds that advertised items for pennies.

Thanks, Chuck and Al; I appreciate the comments on the Ricki. The case is in decent shape and I believe it is the original but have no way of knowing for sure. steve t

Steve:

Those are great guitars! Mine is a 1937- a player, not a collector.

No newspapers in mine, but someone over at TDPRI told me about that trick to make it sound less hollow so I did it when I took it apart to clean the single pot with Caig DeoxIT D5 and DeoxIT Gold (IMO the best contact cleaner and conditioner available). I thought it was interesting that they did not run the audio signal through the pot, but used the pot to ground the pickup. I think that the pot was around 133k ohms and the pickup was low- like 3k. (I wrote that down somewhere and undoubtedly misplaced it. Sad )

Your case looks too nice to be original so I think someone picked that up later. Mine looks pretty beat up, and the steel bangs around inside if you are not careful. So maybe mine is not original.

I think that these go for at least $1500 when in excellent condition like yours so this is a real deal for some lucky forumite.

What is cool about them is that they are kinda halfway between a Hawaiian guitar and a resonator, but with a much sweeter tone than a dobro.

Good luck!

Steve, thanks for the info on the Ricki and the electronics cleaner tip. The case fits this guitar very well. I know times are tough but if I have to keep it for a while, so be it.

I'd say you got a real good price on yours! Glad you are using and liking it.
All the best, stevet

The case that came with mine- undoubtedly 70+ years old but it might have been made for a different instrument- had a broken handle. The two D rings riveted to the case were there but nothing between them but some broken string. Sad

I brought it down to the local shoe repair shop and they put a buckled handle on it for about $20. For another $15 I can have them remove the two buckles and stitch it up.

I was just reading how the 1936 bakelite model was what David Lindley had plugged in a Fender tweed deluxe amp on Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty". Both lap steels have the original Richenbacker horseshoe pickup that sounds fantastic, plus the Silver Hawaiian has more sustain from the hollow metal body. I also think that it does country better- especially Western Swing. All around I think it is a better lap steel.

Good luck selling this!

Steve

P.S. Every time I visit this thread I am even more impressed with the pix of your Ricki! It is a real work of art.

Hey Steve
A neighbor of mine told me that he had some kind of little guitar in his attic and he wanted me to check it out for him. So over he comes with this very beautiful silver hawaiian just like the one you have. I checked it out on the internet and found out that it was built before 1937.
One very quick check for these is the pattern number stamped on the pick up holder. Mr Rickenbacher got his pattern approved in August 1937. So all guitar built after that date have a pattern number stamped on them. All the guitars built before that date have "pattern pending" stamped on them

I tried to buy it from him but no way he would sell it. Its a shame too because he will just put it back in his attic for another 50 years.

The serial no of his is D347

Best of luck to you

Bob

Thanks for the story!

The serial number on mine is D187 and it has just the single control (volume); it is marked "PAT PEND" (I think I went to high school with her! Whoa! )

As for the markings on the pickup holder I would suspect that they still had some of "pat pend" ones left when the patent was approved in August 1937 and I don't imagine them throwing them out. But that is only speculation... maybe they sold the leftover "pat pend" holders on eBay! Devil

There is a lot of information on this page:
