Just about the time I thought I was beginning too half way consider myself a little bit of a steel player, BILL DEARMORE AND SKEETER BLACK came out to the lake over the weekend. Wwhat a monster Bill Dearmore is and Skeeter is the master of tone and style. Oh well, Back to the hot seat and the Jeff Newman tapes.

Jeff, I experienced that same feeling in downtown San Francisco in fall of 1960. As a "Boot" in sailor bellbottoms, I was fresh out of the Ozarks and checking out the big city. I followed this loud country music to an open door and saw a young Roy Clark at the Black Saddle club. He was awesome, and I had never heard such a talent before. Later that year I heard Buck Wayne's Band some where below San Diego. Some are gifted and the rest of us have to work hard to get it. |

I get going pretty good on learning to play the Steel and then we go out to hear a band with a steel in it and then I get blown away and say will I ever be able to play this damn Steel Guitar. It wants to make one give up and sell everything and just go and listen to someone play and suffer not being able to play that Great Instrument.Jeff Newman Tab I can't play But Chuck Letts and Doug Beaumier Tab I can follow real good.Idon't like Jeffs tab nor Herbie Wallaces as I have them all.

Yes I havent missed a sunday in 3 years or so. Bill is the "house" player. Lots of great pickers come to sit in Don Sowersby also come just about every sunday. If you liked his Zum wait till you hear the old Emmons (black of course) and the old sho-bud and evans amps he uses. If you will come down ill buy the drinks! I'm always at the first table right in front of bill. Come on down and bring your picks!

Bill and I have been friends for several years and yes I've heard the old black Emmons many times and you can't match that sound. I'll surprise you one Sun and stop in and visit. See ya later.

You are right on about Bill Dearmore he is one hell of a picker. I went to Granger for the first time last Sunday and had a real good time listening to ole Wild Bill. Don is a great player too and I enjoyed hearing him. Bill let me play a set and boy was I a wreck with those two guys out there listening to my two or three licks. It was fun though and Bill & Don are two of the nicest folks, and best pickers you'll ever meet.. |
