It is with great sadness I bring news of the passing of Murray Charteris in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Murray was an iconic PSG player in the 60 and 70's in New Zealand and has succumbed to complications from Alzheimers at the age of 70 years.

Murray was very supportive and helpful to me when I first started playing in the late 70's to which I will be forever grateful. He played an early Emmons D10 push-pull.

The NZ. Hawaiian Steel Guitar Assn. is compiling a history overview of steel guitarists in NZ and Murray's name came up fairly recently. Chris Bourke is doing a parallel project at the Waikato University and found an item in an old NZ. Listener about the Kaloha Islanders, Logan Charteris on rhythm guitar, brother Murray on steel and sister Lioma on ukulele plus others. They broadcast on 3YZ Dunedin, the last being July 6th., 1955. John Marsden in England sent me a copy of his article on the Beachcombers, dated September 1968, Logan, Murray and Murray's wife, Averill on ukulele. In the article, Murray said they came from Greymouth and I had intended to go to the Post Shop today to look in the telephone directory for the Charteris name in Greymouth and phone each to see if anyone was related to Murray. And tonight I read your post. Paddy, it would seem that you have a lot of information that would update what little we have on Murray, maybe this forum or postal address, yours or mine. We are trying to do the best we can to make sure they do not pass on without a trace. At this late stage it is just about all memory, there are so few to ask and every little bit helps. We would be really grateful if you could help, in fact, you are the only one who can.
