Anyone have any info on Wheeler pedal steels? There's one for sale in my area I'm thinking of looking at. SD-10 3+4 I see no information online at all. _________________ https://www.facebook.com/ggefell/ |

Wheeler pedal steels were built by Lee Wheeler in Northeast Portland in the 70's. A friend of mine bought one of Lee's early steels and I remember it played ok. I visited Lee in the early 70's and he said he wanted to move across the street from Sho-Bud and I guess he finally did and continued building steels in Nashville for a while.
Here's a link to some more information on Lee and Wheeler steel guitars.

Lee was a character. I had a birdseye maple MSA D-12 I bought off Scotty in '75 with a case that was turning to sawdust. Must've been about the same time you met him, John, mid-70s after he moved into the warehouse space off Broad, down by the river near ShoBud. He was one of the few who were building 14 string pedal steels and we talked for hours about U12/U13/U14 tunings and ideas for the best universal tuning.
He built me a metal-clad solid wood case that was even heavier than my old MSA but it lasted me 10 or 15 years through several guitars and thousands of gigs and hardly had a scratch when I sold it.
I played several of Lee's guitars but I stuck with MSA for quite a while before switching to ZumSteel. Lee's guitars were good, but not THAT good.
Could be a decent guitar if the price is right. Realize that parts may be an issue if the need arises. _________________ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page

Bumping an old thread here. One of these Wheeler "Ped-All" S10s is in Briz Guitar & Load in downtown Vancouver, WA as of yesterday afternoon. Looked like it was in good shape and clean but only had 2 pedals (and 4 knees). Had "Made in Portland OR" on it. I believe it was $899.
Also, there's a Fender Deluxe 8, brown/walnut for $999. |

One of these turned up in a guitar store a couple of years ago. It was missing a pedal and generally in really bad condition. I tried to explain the the owner that he needed to send it to Jim Palenscar to have the undercarriage rebuilt, but he insisted that his in-house guitar repair guy could do it.
i have not been back to the store, and don't know what happened to the guitar. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
