11/18/08 will be the one year mark that we have lived without the great friendship of one of the greatest that ever sat down behind a steel.
He will continue to be missed by all and impressed by the intelligent. _________________ Ray Harrison

Ray,
I was about to make a similar post, and saw yours, so, I'll place mine under your thread.
I have been praying for Jean and the family throughout this past year. As the one year mark of PaPa John's homegiong has approached, I have really had Jean, and the family, on my heart alot. I was praying for Jean as I got off work Friday, and was thinking about giving her a call. I reached up and turned on the radio and there was John playing the intro to Fifteen Years Ago. It was an emotional moment to say the least.
Please join me in continuing to pray for Jean, the family, and all their friends at this time, and in the days to come.
Bro. David _________________ Hello to all my steel guitar playing friends. You are in my prayers as you travel to all the shows. I'll see you when I can. Rev. David L. Young / 2007 Martin D-41 Special, 1999 Tacoma DM-9, 2012 Bourgeois Cocobolo back and sides with an Adirondack Spruce top. |

Wow!
I just noticed that on my calendar.
What a great loss of one of the most loving individuals I've ever met and a player who had the touch of an angel.

Hard to believe, and even harder
to cope with!
I felt terrible when Mr. John
passed away last year; my internet
was down and I did not find out
until almost three weeks later. _________________ Laid-back Country picker with a laid-back Country mind; don't let the suit and tie fool you. |

It is still so hard to believe that John is gone. Ray, everytime I play your CD I think of John. His music will be played as long as there is "Swingin' West" and others that appreciate his awesome talent. He is terribly missed. _________________ Mike |

John will always be missed by Roy & I. I can still remember Roy telling me and my heart sank and the tears came. Our friend had gone home and Jean & family left behind to miss him too. We keep them all in our prayers. I still can't play his cd's and not cry. There will NEVER be another John or Jean! Two awesome Christians that we are proud to call friends! Laurie |

I still can't believe it that it has been a year since John's passing, there's no doubt in my mind that John and Conway are together again. |

Ray, thanks for posting this reminder about John, he was truly one of the finest steel guitarists who ever lived as well as being one of the sweetest human beings on the planet........
If any of you haven't heard Ray Harrison's CD "Scratchin' the Surface" you'd better get your copy. They might have 'em on the Forum, if not, Mike Headrick in Tennessee has them. The CD is one of John's last projects and shows just how great and expressive a player he was. An added bonus is legendary lead guitarist Al Bruno. This is some of the best classic country you'll ever hear in you life......JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Jerry, thanks for the plug.
With the great guys I had on the session, John Hughey, Al Bruno and the rest, I went into the booth thinking, "Ray, you're the only one hear that can screw this up".
We had a ball, and I am proud of the product. I'm so sorry that this was John's last session, or at least one of the last.
I sure miss him. _________________ Ray Harrison

John was a dear friend and wonderful mentor to me. I still can't believe he is gone from this world. He and Jean are two of the nicest people I've known in my entire life. I was so privleaged
to be working all those years with Loretta, while John was with Conway Twitty. I was a greenhorn kid back then, and tried to soak up everything I could from a pro like John. Thanks, John for helping me back then, and thank you, Jean, for you and John's wonderful friendship. |

Bill, when people ask me about having John on my session, I tell them how honored I was and how it was such a pleasure to know such a great man. I feel that with John, his humanity came first and his musicality came somewhere down the line after Jean and family.
He is truly missed. I only wish that I could have known him longer. _________________ Ray Harrison

It's hard to find an honest to goodness hero nowadays. Papa John was mine. I feel richly blessed that I got to know the man if only briefly. |

Yes John will sure be missed by all of us that love the Steel Guitar. Our prayers go out to his family.I do not understand they operated on John and Don Helms for the same thing and shortly after we lost two of the top Steel players. I think I would think twice before I went to that hospital.Thousands of people have Heart by passes and they do fine. My brother had a 6 by pass done about 10 years ago and he is doing just fine.

Not a day goes by that a thought of John doesn't pop into my head. A memory, a song, a picture, a big smile on a good friend, are just a few of the things that trigger thoughts of Papa John and how his presence in this world improved mine. I miss him lots.

I have a page on my website dedicated to the memory of John. If you haven't been there, check it out. Scroll down to near the bottom of the page for a copy of the interview with John done by Danny Hullihen. John answers a lot of questions regarding his music career. The following link will take you directly to the memorial page.
