Ricky-That is Huge News! I have know Bud since the old days when he was with MSA. I wonder if he sold out his interest in Carter Guitars. I hope he got a comfortable retirement package, He deserves it. I'll try and give him a call to congratulate him...al. _________________ Michigan (MSGC)Christmas Dinner and Jam on my 80th Birthday.

Talked to Larry this afternoon and Bud is busy setting up his place up there.
Not many of you know but Larry is probably one of the finest machinist you can find.
I have seen his work quite some time ago and always wanted to call him and finally I got around today to give him a call in the few spare minutes that I have during the day.
Bud Carter being there is(like Ricky said)huge news.
Bud did so much for so many of us without us even knowing it.Bud contributed more in the development of the steel guitar then anyone I know off.
This man is brilliant and has a clear perspective when it comes to the instrument we all love so dearly.
All I can say is this...."Way to go Bud"... _________________ Kaylee Records, Round Up Records, Bell Ringer Records, Jo Jo Records, Chickadee Music,

Ron-So true about Bud. I am a little confused as I thought he OWNED Carter Guitars. Now it seems that he did his Magic at Carter Guitars, and now he will do his Magic with his new company. Star Precision. I am sure that he will do well there....al. _________________ Michigan (MSGC)Christmas Dinner and Jam on my 80th Birthday.

We are posting this with Bud’s knowledge to clear up any confusion people may have about Bud Carter’s continuing affiliation with Carter Steel Guitars, as well as his retirement from building steel guitars.
Bud’s position from the beginning of the Company in 1992 has been that of a minority shareholder. Bud wanted to design and build steel guitars and had no desire to be involved in the day-to-day operations of running any company (including a steel guitar company).
The day-to-day operations (from Day 1 in 1992) have been run by myself and my wife, Ann Fabian.
About 5 years ago, Bud came to us and said he’d like to retire at some point and we sat down and worked out a buy-out agreement for his portion of the Company.
For quite awhile, Bud had been looking for land for his retirement house. About 2-1/2 years ago, he finally found a parcel down by the lake and bought the land. Earlier this year, Bud indicated he was ready to go into semi-retirement and stop coming into Carter Steel Guitars’ shop on a regular basis. He wanted to set up a small shop to do occasional repairs (much closer to his new house) as part of his retirement from building steel guitars. He chose to setup his shop in a space that Star Precision (Larry Agan) had available and was not using for Star Precision business. Bud said that he would be doing repairs only and that Larry Agan at Star Precision will continue to make parts for individuals, as well as steel guitar companies, including Carter Steel Guitars.
True mastery is being able to replace yourself without leaving a gap or a hole. Bud has done this by leaving behind a very well-trained staff to continue his work. I have worked side-by-side with Bud for 16 years and have been very well trained by him in every aspect, including building and design. Just for reference, the Carter was designed primarily by Bud Carter. The Carter-Starter and the Magnum were designed primarily by me. Mitchell has been with us for several years and also has been well-trained by Bud and me.
Bud is still affiliated with Carter Steel Guitars on a consulting basis and continues to participate in our product improvements when needed and new product designs.
Carter Steel Guitars will continue, as it has for the past 16 years, to provide quality instruments, on time, at reasonable prices.
Bud Carter’s influence will continue within the steel guitar world and to that end, because his influence is so vast and wide-reaching, we have put up his original Steel Guitar Hall of Fame Nomination here. _________________ John Fabian

| I wish only the best for Bud. He certainly deserves it. Truely a leader in the steel guitar world, as well as, a great builder, probably the best. As far as CARTER STEEL GUITARS goes, I'm sure they'll continue with producing the great guitars they're known for all over the world. |

John,
Thank you for the enlightenment, and Tom Bradshaw for the nomination letter for Bud, who is way overdue for that recognition.
Best to you Ann, Bud, and your staff in the future in everything that you all do.
Thanks again to you and Bud for building me the two finest pedal steel guitars I have ever had. _________________ John Drury

Did anyone think that maybe Bud just wants to retire ? I know I do....
In one of the posts above it states something about Bud now being able to be contacted. I am not sure what that means as I have spoken to Bud directly half a dozen times or more over the last couple of years and he offered me insight on some mechanical things I was thinking about. I called the Carter tech line and BUD answered it, it was that easy !
Congrats to Bud on a well deserved retirement. He has made his mark in this crazy world we live in. |
