Well, I have decided on the four finalists for our caper Satuday nite before dinner....it started out pretty slow but I must say in the last two weeks I've received a lot of real good entrys, and it was really tough deciding on which four to pick, but it had to be done and I just did it. However, I think it's best for me to contact them first and make sure they can all make it to the Convention, and get all the details straight...if you all will allow me 24 hrs to get that done I promise to post the winners (finalists) tomorrow.
I received CDs of lots of winners playing some very good, unique steel guitar, but unfortunately only four slots to fill.
Many thanks to all of the players who took the time to enter, and I hope you will come see me in St. Louis or anywhere else I may be lurking around. If not, give me a call and tell me all the reasons I should have picked your song, and I'll probably agree with most of you. Smile
Much Love to all and I'll post again tomorrow with the names of the 'Fabulous Four', one of which will be our Steel Idol.....I hope Simon doesn't make it too rough on them.

I've heard three of these guys play. All of them great. Dale must be in the same class or Russ wouldn't have chosed him. This should be VERY interesting. Wish I could be Simon for this!!!

The only one I've heard so far is Dale and he is a truly outstanding, accomplished player. The two of us jammed together at the recent steel show in Iowa and I had a hard time keeping up with him. A great player... AND a great singer and bandleader too!

This is gonna be interesting and fun!

Glad to see Joe Turner's name on the list. I had the privilege of trying to stay out of his way on guitar on two gigs a couple of years ago. He's a truly outstanding Extended E9th player. Bonus points for one of the most visually striking steels you'll ever see!

I've heard them all play and the are just excellent! Dale Thomas is a really super player.

One day at the Dallas show a couple years ago, I was returning from lunch to our Rains Steel Guitar Booth and I heard this great chord comping and bass lines being played on the steel behind the great Gary Carpenter...it was Dale Thomas following right along on his C6th!

All four players should "win". HA

Joe is a Great Player and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I'm Super happy to see he is finally getting some National Recognition. I heard him the First Time over 7 years ago and he knocked me out. He is a Terrific E9th Player and He has a Close Friend named Lloyd (Something) Wink . He has been known to travel in good company.

Congrats My Friend.

My congratulations to these winners..I have been priveleged to share the stage with three of them, many times..I do not know Mr Dale Thomas, but I'm sure he is a fine player..
I regret there can be only one final winner..In my mind, they are all winners...
I think the steel guitar is in good hands with players such as these four, and many other 'youngsters' presenting their instruments, and their talents...
RP...'come on in'...

This note is for the four finalists....don't forget to bring charts for a few (three or four) songs to play after the 'carryings on', just in case you win. Smile
Also, I'd like to acknowledge and thank Gary Sill for coming up with this Steel Idol idea a couple of years ago....it's taken a while to make it happen but I know it's gonna be fun.
See you all in a few days, LWATCDR.

I had the priviledge of playing "Till the Rivers All Run Dry" as a duet, with Joe. Joe played steel, and I played Dobro. I've not heard the other gentlemen play, but I suspect they're ALL excellent players. Best of luck to the four of you, and congratulations!

dale, congratulations from orlando !!! just because this ole man is 1000 miles away from st.louis , does not mean he cannot 'hear' you. sounds original, strong intonation and makes a person feel good. why, that's just gotta be the talented dale thomas on his pedal steel guitar.
