Here's my favorite version of sleepwalk. I tried to copy Larry Carlton's arrangement as close as posible.
recorded on seven tracks if I remember correctly with Steinberg Nuendo 3. All instruments played by me. Piano and strings using kurzweil midiboard driving a Yamaha Motif ES, drums are Roland V-Drums and the Bass is a Peavey. Song starts at :07 at about 2:15 to 2:45 open for improv then comes back to main melody chords. Song is a little over 4 minutes and is about 4 MB in size need MP3 player to play. Hi Carl, good job! I do have a suggestion at 43 seconds into your track. I believe that is where the signature steel chime/slide is played? For me, the key fill at that point is too busy and would take away from that signature lick. If the steel is chiming in the intro somewhere, same kind of deal.

Thanks Gary I understand what you are saying but like I mentioned I tried to copy Larry Carlton's arrange which doesn't have the steel signature chime in it. Maybe down the road I'll redo it so there's space for that. This is still my favorite arrangement of the song I originally did this track to record guitar part with my Gibson 335. Just recently I remembered I had it and remixed without the 335 and been playing it using the steel.

| Carl, That was a great job! I played guitar long before I started messing with the steel and Larry Carlton was one of my favorite players. A steel player named Michael Stanton has a beautiful recording of Sleepwalk. I used to hear it on Steel Guitar Radio ocassionally. It sounds like he's on the C neck. I can play at it but dosen't sound like him. Maybe he's using a different tuning besides the standard C6th. Does anyone know? |

Thank you very much for this brilliant backing track.
It is very similar to the 1995 guitar version by
"Hank Marvin" of "The Shadows".
Have you heard Jay Leach take on Sleepwalk at the 2008 L.A Pedal Steel Jam ?. I posted it a few months ago.
Jay Leach is the Pedal Steel/ Guitar player of the
"American Idol" show.

Hi Carl,
Indeed, Jay Leach is an excellent overall musician.
Your backing track is superb. I was wondering why the bass didn't have a little more bottom (acoustic bass for example).
If I may make a suggestion, I would love it if you could make a backing for "TEAR DROP" by Santo & Johnny.
I looked everywhere and couldn't even find a half decent midi file. So I had to make a baking with my Casio Keyboard about 4 years ago to play it. But the quality is far from the quality of your Sleepwalk backing.

It's a beautiful tune that was unfortunately overshadowed by the huge success of Sleepwalk.

Abel: I'm assuming you have a multiple-track tape recorder, or a hard-disk recorder, or similar, where you can record one track at a time. Most of them have 8 to 24 tracks available.
You just play back the Santo & Johnny record and record it on track 1. Then you listen to track 1 while recording your rhythm guitar on track 2. Then you listen to tracks 1 & 2 while recording your bass on track 3. After adding all the backing tracks you put your version of the steel guitar on a vacant track.
Now you can mix all your tracks while turning off track 1, and you have your own version, in exactly the same key and timing as the original.
It's not cheating because you're not using any part of the original recording in your final mixdown, you're just using their recording as a reference. |

Thank you very much for the tip.
I was thinking that you wanted to keep the original but dimmed a bit. That's not the case.
I understand perfectly now.
Since I can't make good backings from scratch like you or David Hartley, I usually either use a midi file or try to reduce the lead or the vocal of an original and play over it just for fun.

I'll have a go at it as soon as I get back from Mexico. 
I'll even use the Guyatone (which is a copy of the Stringmaster) and tune it the same way as Santo did. |

I did just that today. It certainly gives one a humbling lesson. When you start playing alongside the original you realise all sorts of bad habits and differences, like putting notes in that the original doesn't have, using the wrong phrasing, playing single notes where Santo plays double.
I found that after having listened to the original for 50 years, one is apt to blend the rhythm guitar with the steel, and start putting in notes with the steel which were actually put in by the rhythm guitar.
Anyway, it's a very sobering exercise, and makes you appreciate what a work of genius the original was. Santo had no-one to copy, and made it all up on the spot, but after half a century it still holds up.

Such a pity it was put on one of those Free servers, now anyone viewing the thread will be at a loss as to how good the track was.
I don't suppose there's any chance of reposting the file so as to give the thread a little "Continuity"

BTW Alan, what about those chords at the end on the rhythm guitar, did you figure them out?
