It is always an adventure to play a steel show in an environment where 95% of the folks have never heard about a steel guitar before, so I am really looking forward to doing it again tonight (at the club rooms of the Austro-American Society here in Vienna).
Two hours of steel guitar, backed up by parts of my regular band (thanks for your time and efforts, guys!), plus answering a lot of questions about the instrument, technical aspects as well as the history.
Here's my set list:
BUCKAROO
BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY
REMINGTON RIDE
SIX DAYS ON THE ROAD
MIDNIGHT IN AMARILLO
TRACY’S WALTZ
BLUE JADE
FAMILY BIBLE
BLUES STAY AWAY FROM ME
STEELIN’ THE BLUES
YAKETY AXE
MAKING BELIEVE
BLUE BAYOU
SOME BROKEN HEARTS NEVER MEND
IT’S NOW OR NEVER
SLEEPWALK
TOGETHER AGAIN
CAJUN POTATOES
THE GREEN ROAD
EASY GOING
I LOVE YOU BECAUSE
HELLO DARLIN’
TRAVELIN’ MAN
PANHANDLE RAG
LAST DATE
Wish me luck!

Walter; I wish for you the greatest Audience you have ever performed in front of; Wow, what a line up of melodies on your agenda. I'd be in second heaven to be there and be able to hear each of your renditions. Hoping we forumites will get a chance to hear a few of them.. You definitely deserve the very best, Walter, for all you do for your Brothers And Sisters, here on the FORUM.. We just know you will be fantastic.. Blow them away, Walter.. Walter, I hope everything went well for you. I also hope you recorded some or all of the songs. I am hoping to listen to them on your web site.
You are doing a GREAT job of promoting the steel, and steel players, in Europe.
Best regards,
Bent |

Thanks, guys! Everything went well (no broken strings, no technical issues...). I had my video camera and taped the whole thing, we'll see how it came out.

Walter,
Great job. I know that had to be a lot of fun, and with the song list you had, everyone had to enjoy it, especially the fella on the right side of the screen, whose right hand is visable, and moving almost as much as yours. The band also did a fine job. Keep it up.

Again, excellent playing. You mentioned a question & answer portion of your program. What were people interested in regarding the pedal steel guitar? The sound? The mechanics? |

Johnny,
sound and mechanics were #1 - how do you do that, what are the pedals and knee levers for etc. It is always great to see the reaction when you mention great pop/rock recordings and artists that used steel on their recordings: CSNY with Jerry Garcia, Paul McCartney & Lloyd Green, Eric Clapton & Jay Dee Maness,...
