I played a wood neck ShoBud wood neck 3/4 like that for the first 10 years I played. It had the most wonderful tone. I traded it for a metal neck ProII because I wanted to play C6.

Here's my 29 day wonder from Carter. 29 days from the time I placed the order to when it arrived at my door step. I've joked that I can't get 6 sets of E9 strings over the internet that quickly. I had some changes added up at Al Brisco's shop a couple of years ago, so as it sits right now it's a D10 8 and 6. I think I saw all the pages in this thread, and I only saw one other guitar with a burgandy top, and black aprons. The colors were my wife's idea, but Al said Buddy Emmons had a steel that color once. I've had it since January 2000, and it's been reliable, and trouble free.

Hi Paddy,
Nice looking steel.
I've seen that term "Hybrid" about steels but have no idea what that means?
Would love to hear about that.
Thanks,
Andy

Andy, the Zum Hybrid has a new changer that Bruce has designed which is a cross between an all pull changer and a push pull changer - where the raise levers stop against the body (sound board) in the maximum raised position.
So you would tune the E-F# for example like a push pull, using the tuning key - then tune the open note with the hex nut corresponding to that string -- there is a row of hex nuts just above the nylon tuners.
The the E-F raise would be tuned like a normal all pull guitar. See the pic below of the changer end of my new guitar....

There is a more in-depth explanation here: http://www.zumsteel.net/ - under the "Hybrid" tab...

Picture of my Sierra with the Tapper neck. Note the second compensated bridge for fretting in tune.

Ted that is an awesome guitar mate, sorry I missed your test drive in the Telonics room, I think I was having a beer at the time.
I've played Dave Beaty's D10 Infinity though and they are wonderful guitars.

This steel guitar was built for me by Mitsuo Fujii (Excel Guitars) It is a combination of a twelve string pedal steel and an eight string non-pedal. (originally 6 strings and Duane Marrs modified it to eight strings and he didn't charge me a dime. How nice is that!). David Phillips owns this guitar now.

My Blue 1988 Fulawka was in storage for the best part of 20 years before I decided recently to start playing again. It was almost in tune when I set it up after all that time. It sounded just fine even with the old strings. However, the "out of practice player" didn't do it justice.

I just love this thread....

Chris Templeton.... That sierra looks fascinating.. I've never seen anything like it before.
I would love to hear the bottom neck being played. I am assuming you play it like an electric guitar with your left hand pressing stings against the frets and picking and pedalling too..

I like Tommy's high-tech solution to tilting his amp!

At least there's one area in which he and I are similar. Very Happy
