One of the original 1927 tuning buttons cracked and would be difficult to repair.
Would you replace all the buttons with set from StewMac, or...replace the tuner set?
Would it be uncool to invert the tuners so that they are sticking up?
This 1927 National Tricone is a player.

| Anything you do will bother someone's sensibilities. If it's a player, just replace the bad button. Everything else would remain original. If you replace the tuners, save the old ones (or give them to me), just make sure no modifications are needed that can't be reversed or rabid vintage cultists will boil you alive then tar and feather you. |

Try to replace the plastic tuner buttons with a set from StewMac. They are easy to install with one of those small propane torches and a pair of pliers.
I've searched for many years for tuner replacements on my Nationals without any luck. Most of the sets like Waverlys that are sold these days require slight modifications to the headstock or drilling new screw mounting holes, which will devalue your instrument. |

If they still work I'd recommend 'tuning them up' (a good cleaning and some dry lubricant) and putting new buttons on them.
There should be a primer on tuner button replacement here: www.FRETS.com. Just search a round a little.
