I want to get a higher pitched tuning than what I have been using. So, if I use a .009 gauge string as a 1st string tuned to "A", what OTHER GAUGES of strings would I need for a (6th) tuning of some kind ?
I don't care what other 6th tuning it is, as long as it accomodates that 1st string. Open to suggestion.

Hmm... A on top as:

I or III or V or VI
(A6) (F6) (D6) (C6)

A A A A
F# F F# G
E D D E
C# C B C
A A A ?
? F F# ?
? ? D ?
? ? ? ?

I think A on top as the root might be kinda cool, a sort of "alto" A6 tuning.

String gauges can be found here.

If you want to her some really great steelin' on 12-string A6 with a high A on top, check out some of Bob Strum's work. He has several gospel CD's out, and he is one of the smoothest players I have heard. I have his copedent somewhere back home in Florida, but I won't be back home for a few more weeks. If you buy one of his CD's he might throw in a copy of his copedent -- although it might be like pulling teeth (LOL) [Bob is a dentist].

I think his email address is bandcstrum@aol.com

If you email him, tell him Roy said "Hi."

Edited to say that I just realized this thread is under "No Peddlers." Bob plays pedal steel -- but his work is too good to omit my post on a technicality.

John Ely's string gauge chart.

John Ely's Steel Tunings page.

F6 tuning could put A (3rd) on top.

D6 tuning on 8 or more strings could put A (5th) on top. (7 or more strings actually, although only one extra string would probably be first dedicated to a 7th, 6th or 5th on the bottom?).

Aloha,
DT~
