It was a great honor to do a concert on steel with Derek Trucks, Tres Manos, Sonny Landreth, Buddy Cage Dan Tyack (And me)in Holland. We were backed up by the Derek Trucks Band. I think this is recorded at the Paradiso in A'dam last year, I'm not shure, maybe Buddy and Dan can help me out. Just click on this link to hear it. It's no country, but everything else!
Enjoy! (And please let me know what you think of it!)

Johan, can you give us a list of songs and performers, so we know who is doing each number? Sounds great. Thanks. Smile

Johan-

I'd like to second David Doggett's request for a performer-per-tune list, when it's convenient. Beautiful music!

thanks

I'll post a per track listing when I have time to go through it, but if you are listening stereo, Buddy Cage is hard left, then Johan, then Tres Manos (slide) is center left, Derek is solid center, then Sonny is center right, then I'm hard right.

OK I just heard the stream....

The first is (obviously) Derek and Sonny. IMHO the two best slide guitar players in the known universe. Plus the singing of Mike Mattingly (very cool).

The second is 'Just A Closer Walk With Thee' starts out with the amazing Kofi Burbridge on organ. I play the intro, the first verse on lap steel, then Buddy does a straight country thing on E9th. Then Tres Manos does the slide thing, then I finish.

The third is an original by Johan, with a solo in the middle by Sonny. I do some backup to Johan.

The fourth is a acid jam by Buddy, with solos by pretty much everybody, but Derek does the interesting one.

The fifth is Sonny's Congo Square. He does most of the playing in the beginning. Buddy takes the first solo. I take the next (wah wah rocked out). Johan takes the next (clean steel sound). Then Kofi on organ. Then Yonrico, then Sonny takes it out.

The next is an original by Tres Manos. It's pretty much between him and Sonny. Johan and I do some pretty steel backup. Following that Johan takes a solo. That night they threw a solo to me at the end, where I do my poor David Gilmore impersonation.

The seventh is one of many jazz tunes that I always forget the name of. I actually might be a Derek original. It's pretty much a Derek and Sonny showpiece (and it doesn't get much better than that). Buddy takes a solo in the middle.

The eighth is 'Yield not' featuring Mike. I think everybody gets a solo. Just listen to the stereo placement (as I mentioned in an earlier post) and you can tell who's who. Johan and Buddy have the clean steel sound, Derek, Sonny and I are more rocked out. I was seriously addicted to the wah pedal that night. In terms of order, I think it's Kofi, Buddy, Tres Manos, Johan, me, Sonny, and Derek did a little bit at the end.

The last was another version of Buddy's acid jam.

Thanks for reminding me of that week, Johan. The concerts were great, but the best part was hanging out for the days of rehearsal with that amazing group of musicians. Plus I love the Netherlands and the Dutch people, it's always a delight to spend time in your country.

That recording was all from the last night's concert in Amsterdam, except for the last song, which was from a previous night. My favorite part of that night was this song from Derek's set:

Joyful Noise

It is a real tribute to Derek's generous nature that he gave somebody who really has no right being on stage with him (me) take his solo in the song. I suppose it's also a tribute to my playing jones (and selfishness, I suppose) that he let him do it. In any case, I had fun.....
