Anyone know the wiring layout for a pre-war Bakelite with Volume and Tone controls on opposite plates, the input jack is on the player's side.
The potentiometers are tight, so I think they'll need to be replaced too. Is there a decent quality potentiometer available instead of the CTS ones made in China?

Depends on the bobbin ... Rickys had "various" schemes ...
The earliest ones had 1 hot lead, no ground (dedicated pole piece).
Then they used 2 "hot" and 1 "ground".
I've seen 2 "hot" and 2 "grounds".
Of course ... the 1 "hot" and 1 "ground".
Each has its own "unique" way of hookin' up to pots and jack.
The standard wiring schematic for 1 pup/1 vol/1 tone ... will be just fine ...
Just make sure the magnets and mounting plate get grounded via a grounding loop secured to the mounting plate via the # 6-32 bobbin mounting screw.
As far as pots ... I've had no issues with Alpha Pots.

Robert, you might be able to free up the pots by placing a drop of machine oil on the shaft and working it in.
I use "Super Oil" or "3 in 1" or "Hoppe's #9"
The way to get one drop on the shaft, is to put the oil on a toothpick or a large pin
and let the one drop run down to the shaft
bearing.
If it will move, just work it in a little.
If it is jammed, use penetrating oil and let it sit a bit.
This way, you may be able to save your original pots.

| Thanks very much for all the useful info on wiring the lapsteel and getting the potentiometers to free up. I'm going to work on it this weekend and I'll post how I make out. I'd certainly like to keep the original pots in it if possible. |
