Topic: old and new gibson speed knob |

As my newly purchased royaltone had a knob missing, I bought a set of goldtone speed knobs. I had to enlarge the hole to get it on my shafts. Although the knobs look very close, the big difference is that the original one is taller with more clear plastic on top. These will work for now but I will keep searching for a mate.

Check with John at JK Lutherie, he probably has some lying around. I know ALL-PART and PARTS IS PARTS both have some exact replacments as well.

Ron, have you discovered that some of those older pots have larger shafts and knurls.
some speed knobs I ordered from Allparts had to be drilled to fit.

All this info is in Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars.
What you are looking for are known as "barrel" knobs and measure 5/8" high. They were made without numbers from "46-"49 and with numbers from "49-"53. The speed knobs are 1/2" in height and were all numbered. They were made from "53-"55. I don't think any of the barrel knobs are being reproduced. I did have to carefully drill them out. They should hold w/o the splines as they are a snug fit. My barrel knob is numbered. I will watch Ebay. Who knows, it may turn up. Thanks for the info.

| Richard is right about barrel vs speed knobs. As for the shaft size, That all started when imported pots with metric shafts (not nominal 1/4") came into use in the 80's. The shafts are smaller and the splines are finer. If you know that there are 2 types you can avoid the ones that are too small. |
