last saturday, my band played at the folklife festival in seattle. the band after us was paul anastasio's western swing band. johnny gimbal played with them. he heard me playing steel, and he didn't act like it bothered him too much. i'm taking this as encouragement.
seeing him play was great. talk about a guy who is at peace with his instruments. he played a great solo on his mandolin on roly poly, and it didn't look like his fingers were moving at all. what a treat! |

Johnny Gimble, Chet Atkins, Doyle Dykes, Clint Strong,Emmons, Green and/or BYRD.....
What did they have in common?
Each, being the true professional that they are/were, have played very difficult musical parts and yet thro' it all managed to make it all look "simple" without stress or strain.
Compared to so many among the current flock of "musicians" in the country music field.....who nearly always give the impression that they are suffering a severe gallbladder attack or whatever...........while playing some basically run of the mill type of run......
Isn't there something wrong with that picture? Show Biz is one thing but what about reality?

I agree with all you say about Johnny Gimble.
He is an incredible musician who is always calm and contented when he performs.
Some time ago he toured Michigan and I was the guitarist in his backup band when he played the Wheatland Music Festival... a high point of my musical career.
