The original version of Apartment #9 was Johnny Paycheck. He co-wrote the song with Bobby Austin and it was released in 1967. The steel player was none other than Lloyd Green. A great solo!

Billy Sherrills' production, IMHO, one of the best "pure country" EVER!! How simple, and moving can one song be?

Jimmy Day played the classic solo on Johnny
Bush's version of this timeless hit.

Perhaps Tammy's version with Pete was the first to go #1. It's the only version I recall hearing on the radio. Great song and playing! Theresa

Bobby Austin's version came out on Tally in 1966, he re-cut it in '67 for Capitol Records with Ralph Mooney on steel.

In my estimation the greatest version was by Bobby Austin on Capitol with Mooney on steel. I was living in LA when it came out and the big country station at the time KFOX in Long Beach ONLY played Bobby's version. I'm lucky enough to have a copy of the LP record in great shape and a good turntable to play it on. I had the good experience to get to play this with Bobby at a club in Southgate, Calif. called Walt's in the late 60's. We had him for a guest one night and he brought Ralph with him. That's one experience I'll never forget no matter how bombed we all were!

I always thought that was Lloyd on the Tammy Wynette version. I´ll have yet to check out the Bobby Austin version. If it´s Mooney I just GOT to hear it. But while we´re at it, don´t forget Ernest Tubb´s version with Buddy Charleton on steel.

Theresa,
I agree with you. I really liked Pete's playing when he used his own C6th tuning and pedal setup.

If I remember correctly, the song by Tammy that Lloyd played on was D.I.V.O.R.C.E.
I'm pretty sure it was Pete on all the others.
