| Does anyone know who the steel player was on the Willie Nelson session that included "Nightlife", "Man with the Blues", "What a Way to Live" and "The storm has just begun"? |

Hey Herb,Paul Buskirk coul play the "TAR" out of a Doghouse Bass couldn't he.
What ever happened to him? Last time I saw him he lived in Pasadena Tex.?

I last saw Paul Buskirk at a show in Austin in October 19, 1987... I remember the date because that was the day the stock market dropped 25%. I was totally bummed out, so I went to see a Willie Nelson concert that night. Big E was on steel, Johnny Bush played drums, and Paul B., Johnny Gimble, and Freddy Powers were the lead section. Very cool band. Marty Muse also introduced me to Steve Palousek that night. Big E played with thumbpick only, no fingerpicks ("yeah, uh... ya know, whatever works, man" is what he told me).
Paul Buskirk owns a double-neck Bigsby spanish guitar with guitar/mandolin necks. I imagine that would be quite a collectible instrument nowadays! 
Paul is still alive as far as I know, and is probably in his 70's. Still lives in Houston.

The name Paul Buskirk brings back good memories. I saw him around 1946 when he was with Eddie Hill working out of Memphis, TN.
The band came to my hometown in north MS.
He was unbelievable as a mandolin player.
I had wondered what happened to him. The
Louvin Brothers were also in that band.
Great show! |

Willie had a CD out titled "Me and the Drummer" that has "What A Way to Live" that has MR. Jimmy Day on steel along with Johnnie Bush on drums. Jimmy really had some nice touches throughout the entire CD.

Willie's "Man with the Blues" has always impressed me because of the great steel fills and the steel solo. The CD I own has Herb Remington listed as the steel player. Years ago, at Scotty's convention at the old Chase Park Plaza hotel, I played a cassette of that cut for Herb Remington and he said it was probably Joaquin Murphy (whom I thought it must be, because of the innovative single string work blended with jazz chord fills).
Last November, when I picked up Herb at the airport for his performance at our annual PSGA show in Connecticut, I once again played the same tape on the car cassette player. I mentioned that the album credits listed Herb Remington as the steel man. Herb thought about it and finally said "Yes it was probably me". What a truly superb innovative style! But it was just another session date for Herb. |
