Hi everyone...I have an HP ScanJet 4100C
scanner and I'm now getting an error flag
saying that the scanner cannot scan because another device is hogging up something the scanner needs. It says wait for the application to quit or disable it.

Well I don't know of anything that could be doing this. Not in the foreground anyway. Background maybe, but I've had this scanner over a year now and never experienced this problem before.

I also uninstalled/reinstalled the scanner and still got the error flag.

Has anyone else had this dumlemma or a similar one?

I've had that same sort of conflict with a "WinModem" (software-based modem) on my HP computer. It turned out that I couldn't be online and use the scanner at the same time.

I have an HP4100C scanner and haven't run across that. I did have to download a file so it would run under Windows ME, but never any conflict or resource problems.

The HP4100C is a USB device which should not present any problems.

Without exactly what kind of error message your are getting we can only guess what the problem is.

However, one guess could be memory. If you have too many applications opened you could run into a memory problem and the OS will not allow you to open any more applications.

If you have more than 24meg of memory (and my recommendation for any WIN machine is 128meg) make sure your system type is setup for "Network Server" instead of "Desktop Computer" in the System Properties/File System Properties. Changing to "Network Server" will change the way the Operating System handles blocks of memory and is supposed to be a more efficient way, according to several tech bulletins I've seen.

BTW, is the Windows ME a free download, or
does it cost? I may have asked this before,
but either I don't remember, or I never got
a response.

Someone said it's $44.95, but since I got it with my MSDN subscription, it probably cost the company $4495.00.

and Dear Jack...my good friend.......could you
please spell out the path to "Network Server"
a little more precisely.........I've been hitting all the 'hotspots', but exactly what you mentioned in the previous posts have not worked for me; and I'm running WIN98......those HeadTopics are all there, but I could not locate a way to click on
NETWORK................AGGGHHGHHH!!!!!!.

Chip-- To set 'network server' open control panel and from there open system. Click on the 'performance' tab and then on the 'file system' tab. You should see a 'typical role ...' dialogue -- use its' selection arrow to bring up 'network server'. I doubt your scanner problem is caused by lack of memory.

Re-post with a more specific error message.

Thanks Everett......I found it OK and changed
to 'network server'....I had to restart the pc and when it all came back I was still at the control panel and noticed that the mouse
icon changed from a 'mouse' to the WIN98
wavy flag logo...you know...the one you click on and it says "open with".
What's with this? Also, before I went back online to get back here, I tried the scanner
and it still can't scan...same problem still...some other application is going on.

I did try calling HP helpline, but hung up....they want $2.50/minute to tell me how to operate they're product, that I bought, and that put money in they're pockets.....
I don't need to scan nothing that bad....
It'll get straightened out I'm sure. And I will have accomplished it without costing me
$50 or more.

Chip, please detail your system. Brand, CPU, memory, hard drive space, Windows version, etc. Also are there any other USB devices plugged in, beside the scanner. Also has the scanner worked before or has it never worked?? Also try to think back to what you had done prior to it not working, e.g. added any software, etc.

All this is necessary to try and help with the problem. If you don't want to post it on here e-mail me direct.

Hiya Jack...the pc is a Gateway G5-233.
CPU is just a Pentium [no I,II,III....just
Pentium Processor]; GenuineIntel-IntelMMX[TM];
128.OMB RAM; Creative SB16 Emulation [soundcard 16MB]
Hard Drive: 14.3GB used: 2.25GB
free: 12.0GB

I'm running Windows 98. I have 2 USB ports.
One has the HP scanner; the other has a Sony
Spressa CD burner.
The scanner is a good scanner and has been operating OK up until a couple of weeks ago...around the same time I had trouble getting on the Internet.

I haven't really downloaded any software to speak of....just a couple of things off the web.....Go!zilla [faster download program]
and Webcelerator [which I took off, as it seemed confusing and sluggish].

Is this enuff system info? I can dig up more, but not sure what you may want.
