What brand of car do ya'll favor? Seriously, thanks for the tip, Jack. I did the search and found some helpful info. I just purchased a 60's Dual Showman head, and now I'm speaker and cabinet shopping. I think that I'd prefer a cabinet with an open back. I've been using the Bill Lawrence IQ-1200, so I think I'll want a speaker that reproduces those high highs if possible. The 10's in the small combo that I've been useing do a pretty good job of that. I just thought the more opinions, the better.

My favorite for clean pedal steel is a JBL E-130 in a THD cabinet. I also just bought a 60s Showman, and this combination blows away any twin or vibrasonic I have ever heard.

One of the classic sounds for steel is the JBL D-130-F with a high power Fender tube amp. I recently bought a old Twin Reverb retrofitted with one, and I l-o-v-e it. Basically a home brew Vibrasonic.
For new speakers with retro intent I would suggest visiting this site in your research:

webers are apparently very popular with vintage tube amp refurb folks ... their "California" series is designed for "Surf"=LOUD AND CLEAN (Dick Dale making your ears bleed) comparable to the D-130-F
and based how shrill you want it you can get a paper or aluminium dome...
now open or closed back ; there's a question...
I have 1 vintage 2x12 Bassman closed back cab I also love....

My THD cab is interesting. It is ported, but not closed back. The port is a narrow (maybe 12") strip on the back like an open back cab. It has the advantages of an open backed cab (great stage distribution, open sound), with the advantages of a closed back ported cab (greater efficiency, better bass response). It sounds unbelievable, with non of the woofiness of most ported cabs.

I have an old JBL D130-F 4 ohm 15" that seems to get plenty of highs. I don't think it would handle much power though. It sounds great but looks easy to blow out.

Well, I've played thru alot of different
speakers in the past 25 years or so (JBL, Eminence, Black Widow, etc.) & I've finally
settled on Electrovoice EVM-15L's. They're
the most well balanced full range speaker I've heard yet & can take a lickin' as far as wattage. Of course, the only thing is EV isn't making them anymore.

| My early CBS Vibrosonic's JBL is great, but I missed having crisp highs. I had a piezo horn tweeter added next to it in the cabinet. Lots of range now. |

My guess would be, one that sounds good  But seriously now, I really like the Black Widows. I've always been a JBL freak, but I like the sound widows more. The JBL's are a little brighter.
