Has anyone come up with any alternate ways to simulate the sound of a dobro with a steel other than using an
a) ProFex/TubeFex/TransTubeFex, or
b) a Matchbro?

If so, what is the device and what are the settings?

Will using just the bar that is sold with the Matchbro get you close?

After dropping a LOAD on a MatchBro I was surprised to find that it really sounds like a WahWah pedal pushed down to some midpoint. You may want to try a wahwah, flanger (subtle -- go easy on it), and a tad of compression. Those, combined with some fine tuning of bass/treble on the amp or the guitar's tone control, may get close.

Just a hunch.

It sounds to me like you might be able to use a graphic equalizer to get there.

John Lemay posted graphic equalizer settings that can be used for similating a dobro sound. Maybe someone can get John to repost them.

Back to the original comment about buying a MatchBro and not getting the sound. I have one (the original model with adjustable controls) and I get comments all the time about how good the dobro sound is. I used it on a session that I did last winter and the guy I did the session for played it for a Bluegrass friend and he couldn't believe it wasn't a real dobro!

A lot of it is in technique. Put you volume pedal at about halfway down and take your foot off of it. This will force you to pick harder, and to control dynamics with your right hard like Dobro® players do. Use a bar with less sustain - glass, plastic or polished wood all seem to work pretty well. These two things go a long way towards getting that sound.
