Mike...
Do you have info on which frequency ranges are emphisized in the construction of Peavey steel amps? How wide does the shift spread the mids into the upper and lower frequency range?
Which frequency ranges are covered by the presence control, bass control, etc?
Just curious.
Thanks
Dennis

The data that we have compiled for the design and construction of steel amplifiers has come from many years of R & D from trade shows, dealer input, customer input and artists' input...............and a lot of trial and error.

Since the steel guitar can reproduce frequencies in the extreme low end of the spectrum to the extreme high end of the spectrum, the cabinet construction has a lot to do with the "voicing" of the sound that it's trying to reproduce. The speaker's voice coil can also play a part in how a speaker is voiced and what frequencies can be enhanced. Theoretically, all frequencies are effected by the cabinet construction.

To find out how much frequency range can be obtained or affected by the MID/SHIFT controls, it's a simple as looking at the faceplate of one of these units. Take the Nashville 400 for example, the SHIFT control can affect frequencies from 150Hz. to 1.5 Khz., which is the same as 1500 Hz.. Then, using the MID control in conjuntion with the SHIFT control, you can cut or boost the selected frequency plus or minus 15db. These frequencies are very critical in obtaining a pleasing sound.

The PRESENCE control is a Shelving type of control which is centered at 5kHz. and the LOW control is also a shelving type centered at 60Hz..

Hope that this helps.

I have played through the newer PV steel amps, but own and play through two old session 400s. The newer ones are parametric and the old 400s passive, but I always end up with the knobs turned to the same settings to get similar tone? Do you know the frequency ranges of the controls on the old 400s? There are no numbers on the control panels.
Thanks Again
Dennis
