Hi BoB:
How are you making out with the Mesa Boogie 50/50 amp? I may be able to aquire one of these amps and I wanted your opinion on the vibe difference between the power amp you were using. As if I don't have enough equipment already! I guess there's always room for one more amp!  |

Hi Len,
So far so good with the Mesa Fifty/Fifty. I really don't have much to compare it to, though, because until now I've always used combo amps. At the medium size gigs I've played with it, it had plenty of power. I played one big street dance with it, and they miked both cabinets. Still, we were really pumping on stage and it sounded real purty.
My unit has a crackling problem when I first turn it on that goes away after about a minute. If you're test driving one and it sounds wierd at first, give it a few minutes to warm up.

Bob, the crackling problem which goes away,
is most likely a small electrolytic cap in one of the pre-amp or driver stages.
The cap will develop a puncture in it's dialectric and then slowly reform itself as voltage is applied to it.
The crackling will get worse over time.
However, the nature of this type of intermittent problem is that sometimes it can be very bad and sometimes not there at all.
The remedy, of course, is to replace the cap.

| The trick is identifying the cap! One of these days I'll haul the thing out to Mike Bendinelli for tweaking. Until then, I'll just live with the noise. |

| b0b-what kind of pre-amp are you using?4-or 8-ohm speakers?I've seen these power amps for sale used and wondered if they were loud enough to use live...right now I have a Mosvalve 500-it sounds really good but I LOVE that power tube sound...thanks-Steve |

Initially I was using a Tubefex, but I missed having a footswitch for distortion. So I switched to using my Mesa/Boogie Maverick as the preamp, with the Tubefex as an effects unit in between it and the power amp. That worked pretty good.
Now I've replaced the Tubefex with a Lexicon MPX-100 since I don't need many of the Tebefex effects. It's sounding real nice, but it's a nuisance to set up since the preamp is actually a combo amp that isn't in the rack. I'm considering a Mesa V-Twin or a Tube Works Real Tube 2 so that I can have the preamp in the rack with the MPX-100 and the Mesa 50/50.
For speakers I've been using 2 JBL D-130's (I think that's the model number - they are JBL 15" full range speakers.) I plan to stack a pair of 12" EVM's on top of them for a fuller sound on big gigs.
It's hard for me to imagine a venue where the Mesa 50/50 wouldn't be enough power. The thing really kicks butt!
