I have some questions about this. Where is this chart published? In a magazine, online, or what? How many reporting stations contribute to this chart?

I saw this chart on a local "Americana" station link, www.alternativecountry.com then click "charts". As I understand, when Gavin shut down their americana chart, there were about 200+ station reporting. Now there are only about 44. I'm not sure who they are reporting to. What about www.americanachart.com ? And there are other charts out there claiming to be "americana". I sure wish Gavin would have kept things together. Just when we thought charting had some crediblity.

Thanks Chris, "Americana Chart" looks like something that the fans vote on. "Alternative Country" dosen't explain anything at all, as far as how they come up with that. Another one to check out, and the only one that explains how they come up with their chart is "TexasMusicChart.com" .

I guess the reason they call this one "Texas Music" is because you can't honestly call frat dudes playing Dave Mathewes style songs "Country" or even "Americana", and in "Texas Music" this style that I call "Frat-Rock" seems to play a pretty big part. Well, that's a whole other subject.

So with the coverage of this loosley defined genre spotty at best since Gavin dropped the Americana Chart, I wonder if it is worth it to hire an American Radio promoter to promote a new cd? These guys charge $3000-$4000, and thats alot of money...heck that was alot of money back when it guaranteed that your name would be somewhere in the Gavin for all the music business to see. Now all that would get is your name on a couple of small time web sites?? Whats an "Americana" band to do??

I don't think it hurt anyone's career by Gavin dropping the chart. There are tons of alternative stations (in Texas at least) that play these artist's music. All the one's I have played with, and that's about all of 'em, all pay promoters and have publicists, distribution, etc. They all have relative success as independants. Pat Green, Charlie Robison have forced Nville to take a hard look at what's going on. They both just signed big. Guys like Radney Foster, Rodney Crowell, Kevin Welsh, have turned independants.
These charts for the most part are not a good national sample, but they're good for the genre. Gavin's Americana was the best, most credible, because it had 200 some odd stations reporting, now it's only about 44, and someone else runs it. I wish they would have hung in. It seemed to be growing.
