I have been encouraging our band, Mended Heart, to play more Western Swing. In fact, we have been invited to play in the Seattle Western Swing Society’s annual “Pioneers of Western Swing” program in August. Because of this, our guitar players and the bass player want to learn more about Western Swing chord progressions, licks, etc. Some time ago I found a video instruction on Western Swing Guitar on Ebay but was unsuccessful in winning the auction. Can anyone give me any leads on where we might go for Western Swing Guitar instructional materials? |

I found some good basic info here: http://www.adelphi.edu/~bradley/Flatpickle/swingchord.txt
I have several such videos. I think one is by Joe Carr. Homespun probably has several by now.
I also got this tip from a seasoned recording pro, and it has helped me tremendously in phrasing Jazz, Swing, & Western Swing rhythm guitar: Use strong downbeats on the 2 & 4 (on a straight 4/4 tune, count one, TWO, three, FOUR.)
Worked for me, anyhow.
I also would recommend the book "Western Swing Fiddle" by Stacey Phillips, which has a lot of great, classic W.S. progressions in it. If you also bother to work out & adapt the lead fiddle parts for the guitar (not super easy, but do-able with patience & some effort), you can play some smokin' hot Western Swing leads too.
W.S. is my favorite style. "Honey Fingers" forever! |
