The original Barcus Berry pickups were mounted to a solid maple block of wood. Which doesn't really work all that well for other pickups of other thicknesses. What I do is remove the block and drill some 7/64" holes directly into the body. I then use #4 pan head sheet metal screws (1" works for most pickups I have used), with springs cut to 7/8" or so. The trick is to devise something to keep the springs from falling off while you position the pickup. I use short pieces of the little plastic bread loaf fasteners (usually the round kind). A turn or two of this holds the spring in place:

The pickup compartment in the neck is tight on an MCI and drilling these holes can be tricky to do without gouging the aluminum sides of the neck compartment. And sometimes you have to take some material off of the bottom plate on the pickup to get it to fit into the compartment. But all in all it is a method that has worked well for me on MCI's, and it allows you to adjust the pickup height easily.

Depending upon the thickness of the pickup you are installing, you may find you need a different length screw (1 1/4" for example).

Sorry Kevin if this was TMI Rolling Eyes 😂
