| Hi all- I'm rebuilding my music room literally from the ground up- reframed level floor, adding windows, etc.,sub-floor conduit for cables to an amp closet. Ive trashed the old busted music desk, and I'm looking for suggestions for a new one. Could be pre-fab, or something I build. It will hold the basics- laptop, monitor, maybe the monitors, pre-amp, interface. No need for rack space. Maybe drawers on one side. 80% of it's use will be steel overdubs, with the steel at a right angle to the desk. The rest, writing charts and practicing, other mic'd instruments in the middle of the room. If you have a set up you love/suggestions, I'd love to hear about them. Thanks. |

I’d say it’s impossible to suggest what you will need…only you can decide that. Cost is a major factor.
I will say with absolute certainty that whatever you think you’ll need, double the space. There’s always an attention grabbing preamp for choices, always a cool mic or interface goodie…space runs out real quick.

You might look at the Uplift desks. They make “stand up” desks. I really like mine.
It powers up and down in height, lots of options for plug-ins.

...this is pretty humble, but works for me an I love it. I got the largest adjustable frame (varidesk) I could find that was capable of 350 pounds of weight ... Having not had enough room from where we'd moved from I wanted some real estate on my desk, so I bolted a 3'x8' (forget what it was exactly called, but not typical plywood) board. I record with my DAW from here as well as video. And if that takes me too long, when I'm done, I move the steel out of the way and raise the desk so I can stand up, give my tired hind end a rest and start to edit. If I get tired of standing editing I lower the desk and roll my Tempur-pedic Office Chair in and get comfortable.
You'll notice that there's a wee sag in the center, though everything is bolted down tight, so this is inherent to this piece of wood. If I were to do it over I'd look into maybe something like a Door Core or something a bit stiffer and maybe even lighter.

A few years back I gave up trying to find something pre-built and I custom built a desk and a couple of extra tables in my studio. I'm no carpenter, but with a little thinking ahead and keeping it simple, it has worked really well.

BTW, crude as it is I think I did that desk for under 400 bucks
