Hello
I do alot of behind the bar bends on my 8 string lap steel and want to replicate this a bit on an 8 string square neck reso guitar. On the lap steel I use an E9 tuning (lower 8 strings of the standard Nashville pedal steel type tuning). This tuning is a bit tight for the reso for bar bends. I was thinking of tuning a few steps down and using some thicker strings, as I'm thinking putting lighter strings on the reso will not bring out enough sound from the cone. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this.
Thanks

I saw this post a while back and would have replied but I couldn't remember the details of the Mike Auldridge tuning I was thinking of. I just stumbled on it this morning. It's from an VHS tape by Mike Auldridge on 8 string resonator guitar. He used a G6, C6 and C9 tuning. I thought C9 might be of interest. Here's the tuning and string gauge he used.

D .016
B .018
E .014
C .018
G .026
E .034
D .035
C .045

It's the top 8 strings of an E9 with the two "chromatic" strings.

It’s not the gauge of a wound string that determines the tension it’s the core. So a set of strings designed for lower tension like Aloha for Wiessenborne guitars or strings for vintage guitars will be easier to bend because of a smaller core diameter.
