I was reading another thread, which is now closed, and I thought I would just share a remark recently made to me that reflects alot of what the other discussion was about.
I, like Bob Carlucci, play a Carter with a TT pickup. I have also been told that I strike my strings very aggessivly. Now that being said, here is the story;
I recently filled in for an awesome steel player that plays an Emmons and has a very distinct jazz, full chord style of playing. He was in the hospital and I sat in with the band for a month. The lead guitar player is a former member of Boy Howdy, a southern California band that had some very big hits.
At the conclusion of the first set with him he commented that I had a very "Bakersfield", "West Coast" sound. I had honestly never thought about it before but have always liked a certain tone and have always tried to capture it, as we all have. Coincidentally, Buck Owens was one of my all time heroes, imagine that....
I just found it interesting how the comments about tone covered everything from amps, settings, pickups, to touch and the way that you strike a string. They were all right answers, I believe that the statement made to me confirmed all of the above and I had done it without even knowing it.

I've always wondered: What exactly is the West Coast sound? How does it differ from the full chord, jazzy sound you describe in your post?
Thanks! |

I've always considered Buddy Cage's "Panama Red" intro about as west coast, bouncy of a sound as you can get. Also anything by Sneaky Pete with the Red Hot Burritos. Anyone else? |

Pretty much any of the Old Buck Owens stuff. Whether it has Mooney or Brumley on it...it is beautiful & darn fine example of West Coast.
