A friend of mine recently purchased a 10-string Fender pedal steel of a design that I didn't know existed. It had pull rods instead of cables. It sounds good (although the pedals are a little stiff moving). I didn't know that Fender made any such guitars.

What is this guitar? How long did fender make guitars with pull rods instead of cable, and why didn't they permanently switch to this design?

Are you refering to the black ones? They were a Sho-Bud/Fender joint venture.

That's probably a Fender "Artist" model. They made about 4,400 of them in the Music City Manufacturing (Sho~Bud) plant, owned by Shot's son, Dave Jackson. (per Bobbe Seymour). I think that was in 1975, but Bobbe would know for sure!
