I have a question to all specialist n Hawaiian music:
In his instruction course JB played and tabbed the song in C, but on his records he played it in F (as well as Bud Tutmarc did). Personally I prefer the sound in F, but when Hawaiians would play this title, which key would they go for? Is there a standard key? (Like everybody plays Sand in G for example)
Thanks in advance for some insider information

G on mandolin, C on steel. Probably works in any key. |

I'm not very fussy !! I play tunes in whatever key works the best on the C 6th tuning
Some tunes like The One Rose, were in E flat ! And so was Harbor Lights, which isn't Hawaiian of course, but popular.. I never play in that key, to give the back-up guys a break !! |

Thanks Bill. Sure, I can transpose every song to any key, no problem.
The reason for my question was: Going up the frets so far means that some licks and variations which work in C don't work or do not sound good anymore. Just playing the song isn't the thing but when I'd like to work out some special chops and in between licks I'd prefer to think about it in a key that is mostly used with the song.
In his instruction course Jerry Byrd changes his playing every time the scheme starts again. But some in between licks and changes from 2-note slants to full chords etc. wouldn't be playable in F and other way round. On his record his interpretation is completely different from the C version in his course.
I just try to avoid spending time on stuff I'll almost never use.
But I guess C is the most common key. Thanks! _________________ My YT channel: www.youtube.com/user/madsteffen |
