thank you my friend... this is my dream banjo, back in Croatia 30 years ago I got a catalogue from Wildwood, and it arrived in the mail while I was at the school... when I got back home from school my Dad was waiting at the door, looked at me , and said "it would be best if you don't even see this" lol ... banjos were gorgeous but way too expensive for us at that time... I kept that catalogue, and even slept with it ... one day I got home from school, and my mom and dad were waiting on me, when I walked in the house my mom shouted "yippee" and throw bunch of cash in the air, my dad was smiling, and he said "there you go, now you can pick if you want a steel guitar, or banjo" ... I already had a cheap banjo, but I didn't have steel, so I decided to get my first pedal steel, Fender 800 from Mr. Dusan Papic ... the rest is history... I had some awesome parents, and childhood I tremendously enjoyed ... I should really take this banjo off the market, and hold on to it, brings back some very dear memories... _________________ https://steelguitarsonline.com/ |

In the 1970s, Mark Platin used the Wildwood Music storefront in Arcata, CA for his startup banjo business. (Hence the name Wildwood Banjo.) The players who ran Wildwood Music were in a very popular bluegrass band, so having a banjo builder inhouse was a nice fit. Of course, we all patronized Wildwood Music.
Back then, I was a poor student attending Calif. Humboldt State University in Arcata. In 1976, as I was a entering my senior year, I took out a student loan from BofA and ordered a new Wildwood 5 string bluegrass banjo from Mark. It was gorgeous. We called it the ‘Pumpkin because of the wood stain. It looked similar to your banjo listed here. It too had a vine inlay all the way up the neck. The inlays were stunning . (Wish I could find one of the photos.) The banjo played like a dream & sounded as good as any that I recall.
Unfortunately, within a few years after graduation, a financial emergency arose where I was forced to choose between selling the Sho Bud or the banjo. For practical reasons, I let go of the Pumpkin. However, looking back on all the instruments that I’ve let go over 40 years since, this is the one that still stings.
Damir, please do your best not to sell the Wildwood. You’ll always regret it. |

Kenny, thank you so much for a great story, I first found out about Wildwood from the banjo book I had, I ordered a catalog from Mark, and the rest is history, my life long love affair with Wildwood banjos began.... that was back in 1984.... ever since I've been looking for my dream Wildwood banjo... I had Stellings, Gibsons, Hubers and what not, they all came and go... until I finally got this one... I have never seen a more beautiful banjo then this one in my life, even more beautiful then the banjos I saw in the catalog... I had a buyer for this banjo for $4,500.00 cash, I decided not to sell, instead I raised the price to $5,500.00 , I really don't want to sell for that much either, do I think I will be pulling this off the market soon.... it brings back many memories on my early days, and my father who passed away back in 1992 at the age of 49 ( my age now) ... and I know you are right about me regretting selling this banjo...
this mahogany Wildwood I traded awhile back, and was sick for doing that for a long time...until I found this maple one _________________ https://steelguitarsonline.com/ |
