I'd like to mention that while Don said he "never" used bar slants, he did OCCASSIONALLY use them. He would forward slant on his second and third strings and besides being able to clearly hear it on the records, I saw it many times with my own eyes.

I always thought the last note on Hey Good Looking was a slant. That's the only way I've found to play it.

Don Helms played for Charlie Pride as he sang Your Cheating Heart on a tribute show. Don was asked some questions after the song, and told how he traded his Fender Steel for his famous Gibson Console Grande, "Ol Red".

The Fender was a double neck and I believe Don told me the trade was made somewhere in Virginia.

sorry for resurrecting this

this makes a little more sense that I had a family member that dated Hank (I live in Virginia)

Also would e13 be ok too?

I went back and looked in Don's book, SETTIN' THE WOODS ON FIRE, Copyright 2005, regarding purchase details of his famous GIBSON CONSOLE GRANDE. On page 124, he gives details of his purchase of Ol' Red. He states that they were doing a big weekend show at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore where he finalized the purchase for $100, plus his double 8 string Fender.
