Can you use medium gauge strings (13-56) on a 1923-1925 Weissenborn?

I just restrung a friend's Hilo hawaiian guitar with a hollow neck from the 20s or 30s with Daddario medium gauge strings (13-56). Sounds great, no issues at all.

It depends on your tuning. I use a set from .056 to .015 on my Weissenborn tuned to D. If I go up to E, I use .053 to .012. Some folks use even higher tension strings, but I am paranoid about damaging the top.

On a vintage Weissenborn, I'd always use the lightest gauge I could given the age of the instrument. FYI, here's Bill Asher's advice for C6th on a Weissenborn:

Here' Bill Ashe'sr String Gauge Advice:

For new Master builds C6

C E G A C E
.039, .032, .026, .022, .018, .013

For vintage acoustic Weissenborn type guitars use this lighter adjusted set.

C E G A C E
.036, .029, .024, .019, .016, .011

*NOTE always use a wound third string for slide guitar sets.
