After reading the post about steel dying in Hawaii, I just thought I would put up a post from today's coffee shop jam in Wailuku, featuring Geri Valdriz on steel (I'm on standard guitar, but we switch back and forth). He's playing a long-scale, big magnet frying pan. I am playing a 1933 Gibson L-12:

Geri is a force in trying to bring it back--he plays a lot, and even talks to school groups, etc., about the history of kika kila.

Geri is indeed a wonderful player whose aloha spirit really comes though his beautiful tone...check out his CDs at his website... have really enjoyed "Breath of Steel" and "Kika Kila Na Mele Nahenahe" which also include a few vocals by Verdine Kong. The care he takes with his music shows in how he packs his cds...best packed shipment ever received from anybody.

I was also able to find a copy of his early "Hawaiian Steel" CD via Amazon or eBay, and this is another one I am really glad to have.

Geri told me he plays an A6 tuning (Low to High)E F# A C# E A

Nahenahe indeed...
