Hi. I'm thinking about an E6 tuning for my dobro

Same as C6 but two tones higher. E G# B C# E G#

Is there any precedent for this? I want to use Hawaiin and swing sounds using a dobro.
Thanks

Al

Strings may be too light to push the cone adequately.

G6 may be a better choice: G-B-D-E-G-B

I use A6 on my "dobro"...but I don't play Bluegrass on it.

G high bass is the standard tuning but that was to adapt to Bluegrass banjos.

Sometimes I used G6, but it was the low to high BDEGBD, which is like A6 down a step.

You could also consider the OLD E6/C#m tuning that Sol Hoopii and Bud Tutmarc used:

low to high

EBEG#C#E

This can be down with a standard set of guitar strings, although I would use thicker strings for the higher ones if possible.

I started recently using D6/Bm7 and loving it, a whole step lower.

That's the old E6/C#m7 tuning I was talking about., down a step. Cool!

I currently use G6 (D B G E D B) its just like A6 down one step or C6 (high G) down 2 1/2 step so Im not lost, it sound good and still have that bluegrass G tuning sound! If I wasn't playing bluegrass at all I would tune to A6.

Which I do since I don't play Bluegrass!

The Bluegrass thing sure has influenced the Dobro.

The top G# may be too thin sounding. That's why I have my 7 string Dobro tuned to: (h-l) E C# B G# E/F# D/C# E
The middle E can be tuned to F# for more of a swing or hillbilly jazz sound. I also used this tuning for many Luau's where our Hawaiian group would travel around the tables With one of our dancers giving an 'up close and personal' view of the band.

Works great for western swing.

Thanx,
Jim

I'm using E6th on my eight-string reso and lap steel. Love it! I tried many tunings but found that this one works best for so much stuff. True, it isn't the ideal set up for bluegrass, but I switch to my banjer for that!
