In 1983, my days in the honky tonks and biker bars were ending. I got a job teaching music and recording engineering at the local community high school. Anyhow, the kids (long haired, weed growing/smoking children of Mendocino's hippie crowd) were always in the studio recording stuff.
One of my students, British kid named Charles Tyler, wrote a Country song, go figure. (NOTE: Just heard from Charles that he did in fact write this. An 18-year-old British kid fresh off the boat. Great words, this is a hit...)
He and the other kids did the tracks and asked if I'd play pedal steel on it. I did it in one take and moved on.
I haven't heard this cut since the day I did it so it was great when Charles sent me this today. He lives in Australia or somewhere now. Please remember these are kids between 15 and 18 and most definitely not C&W players. The vocals come and go but what the hey...
Those were the days. They never did the fade at the end...

Tom, that was terrific! I love that style (talking blues?) Reminded me of "Alice's Restaurant." All of the tongue-in-cheek wisdom still applies today. It's a real gem, so thanks!!
Your steel part was right on the money. And you made me wait for it, something I should learn to do better.
The video was fun to watch, too. I missed some things, it moved along pretty quick. Gotta watch it again!
Ha, ha... there's Roy!

Fantastic! Catchy song, clever lyrics, great steel, what's not to like? Even a brief glimpse of a nice '65 or '66 Corvette at about the 1:59 mark. I'm going to bookmark this one. |

Thanks guys.
These "kids" are all in their late 40's, early 50's now. They all grew up to be great men. I'm just amazed that a kid from London could have such a sympathetic understanding of what makes a great Country song. These kids were playing Def Leopard and AC/DC, not Merle or Conway.
I'll cut them a lot of slack on the harmonies. It's the thought that counts... _________________ I need an Emmons! |

Nice;Tom! You got that classic "muted picking" sound that I love DOWN! Was very prominent back in the day.
Do you pick block or use a finger? _________________ A couple D-10s,some vintage guitars & amps, & lotsa junk in the gig bag. |

Palm blocking was my game Dickey. Jeff showed me how to do it.
FWIW, the 2018s really suck. Not gonna give away my '04 WG after all... _________________ I need an Emmons! |
